Now featuring the problem-solving CD-ROM, StressAlyzer, the Sixth Edition of this book continues its tradition as the leading text in Mechanics of Materials. With its hallmark clarity and accuracy, this text develops student understanding along with analytical and problem-solving skills. The main topics are the analysis and design of structural members subjected to tension, compression, torsion, bending, and more. The book includes more material than can be taught in a single course so instructors have the opportunity to select the topics they wish to cover.

=> To Current Grades Evaluations Fall 2002 Quizes: Quiz 1 Quiz 2 Quiz 3 Quiz 4 ... Final Homework: Course Synopsis:
The course will provide tools to understand the mechanical behavior of polymers, ceramics and metals. The course centers on an expansion of the discussion of continuum mechanics and constitutive equations begun in the introductory mechanics course. Mechanics of Materials focuses on a tensoral description of stress strain and strain rate. The course will consider both dynamic and static behavior and will consider the coupling of these in viscoelastic materials. Books:
Although there is no assigned text for the course, it is highly suggested that the students purchase a text that outlines the application of continuum mechanics to either polymers, ceramics or metals. The course web notes will follow books listed below.
  • Web notes
  • Understanding Rheology, F. A. Morrison
  • The Physics of Polymers, G. Strobl
  • Introduction to Continuum Mechanics, L. E. Malvern
  • Viscoelastic Properties of Polymers, J. D. Ferry

    Student Review
    I used this book to take a mechanics of materials course online. The book is well written and easy to understand, a very important attribute since I didn't have a TA or professor to ask questions. There are many well explained examples. The book was also a valuable reference as I continued my engineering studies. It is a book that I will certainly keep for the future.
    Information Overload!
    I'm sure this is the best book ever written on the subject. At least everyone else reviewing the book seems to think it is. But I don't. I'm an engineer, just not civil or mechanical. As a materials engineer I occasionally need to solve mechanics problems. Every time that happens I go back to this book to try and find what I need (I used this book in a class on deformable solids 4 years ago). And then every time I do so I'm reminded why I never use this book - it's way too involved! You have to read several chapters just to answer to a basic question. So, I always end up reading wikipedia articles to learn the stuff I'm interested in. Then, once I'm familiar with the subject I go back and double check my wikipedia-knowledge with this textbook to make sure wikipedia is correct. It always is, but I check anyway.

    http://www.public.iastate.edu/~sturges/Higdon.html
    Mechanics of Materials:
    Introduction/Purpose
    The primary objectives of a course in mechanics of materials are:
  • to develop a working knowledge of the relations between the loads applied to a nonrigid body made of a given material and the resulting deformations of the body;
  • to develop a thorough understanding of the relations between the loads applied to a nonrigid body and the stresses produced in the body;
  • to develop a clear insight into the relations between stress and strain for a wide variety of conditions and materials;
  • to develop adequate procedures for finding the required dimensions of a member of a specified material to carry a given load subject to stated specifications of stress and deflection. These objectives involve the concepts and skills that form the foundation of all structural and machine design.
    The principles and methods used to meet the general objectives are drawn largely from prerequisite courses in mechanics, physics, and mathematics together with the basic concepts of the theory of elasticity and the properties of engineering materials. This book is designed to emphasize the required fundamental principles, with numerous applications to demonstrate and develop logical orderly methods of procedure. Instead of deriving numerous formulas for all types of problems, we have stressed the use of free-body diagrams and the equations of equilibrium, together with the geometry of the deformed body, and the observed relations between stress and strain, for the analysis of the force system acting on a body.
