General Immunology
Host defense is present in many forms. Overall, the Immune Response (IR) can be divided into two major classifications; humoral and cell-mediated. While these responses are not mutually exclusive, they provide distinctly different avenues for dealing with pathogenic organisms or altered host cells. These different responses will be discussed in more detail later. Immune Response Humoral Immunity Cell-mediated Immunity (Antibody) (Cytotoxicity) Some of these responses are specific, others are non-specific. This page will introduce host defense mechanisms by defining some commonly used terms and describing the specific cells and tissues involved in these immune responses. DEFINITIONS: Antigen (Ag): A molecule which elicits a specific immune response when introduced into an animal. More specifically, antigenic (immunogenic) substances are:
  • Structurally complex (proteins are usually very antigenic),
  • Accessible (the immune system must be able to contact the molecule), and
  • Foreign (not recognizable as "self"). Antibody (Ab): A glycoprotein produced in response to an antigen that is specific for the antigen and binds to it via non-covalent interactions. The term "immunoglobulin" is often used interchangeably with "antibody". We will use the term "immunoglobulin" to describe

    MSc Medical Microbiology
    This course aims to provide a comprehensive theoretical knowledge of medical microbiology including the spread of micro-organisms, disease causation, diagnosis and/or treatment of pathogens of major significance to public health and advanced practical training in this diverse field. The increasing incidence of microbial infections worldwide is being compounded by the rapid evolution of drug-resistant variants and opportunistic infections by other organisms. Students wishing to be awarded the MSc degree in Medical Microbiology may take any of the courses shown below. In response to a high level of student interest in viral infections, LSHTM has decided to offer the opportunity for students who focus on viruses in their course choices to be awarded an MSc degree in Medical Microbiology (Virology) . This choice will depend on the study unit selection of the individual student in Terms 2 and 3. Graduates from this course move into global health careers related to medical microbiology in research or medical establishments and the pharmaceutical industry.

    Medical Microbiology Course
    The science of Medical Microbiology includes studies of the human immune system and hundreds of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and helminths. The impact of microbial diseases on human health cannot be overstated. While most infections are relatively uncomplicated and treatable, invariably they are significantly more threatening when our defense mechanisms are weakened. Immune competence and immune dysfunction have a substantial impact on many areas of clinical medicine, and more persons succumb annually to infectious diseases worldwide than to cancer and heart disease combined. Regardless of one's clinical specialty or subspecialty, issues in immunology and infectious diseases represent a significant proportion of a clinical practice. The Medical Microbiology course has two principal missions:
    • To provide a foundation on which to build subsequent knowledge and expertise;
