Introduction to Medical Microbiology
A BIT OF HISTORY Leeuwenhoek discovers bacteria. Benjamin Martin describes a germ theory of disease in his book A New Theory of Consumptions: More Especially of a Phthisis or Consumption of the Lungs "The Original or Essential Cause, then, which some content themselves to call a serious disposition of the Juices, others a Salt Acrimony, others a strange Ferment, others a Malignant Humour, may possibly be some certain Species of Animalculae or wonderful minute living creatures that, by their peculiar Shape or disagreeable Parts are inimicable to our Nature; but, however, capable of subsisting in our Juices and Vessels"
"The minute Animals or their Seed . . . are for the most part either conveyed from Parents to their Offspring hereditarily or communicated immediately from Distempered Persons to sound ones who are very conversant with them. . .It may, therefore, be very likely that by an habitual lying in the same Bed with a consumptive Patient, constantly eating or drinking with him or by very frequent conversing so nearly as to draw in part of the Breath he emits from the Lungs, a Consumption may be caught by a sound person." Robert Koch sets guidelines for how to prove that a particular microbial agent is responsible for a particular disease. Koch's postulates state that:

Medical Microbiology D. Greenwood, R Slack, J Peutherer, eds. Edinburgh: Churchill Livingstone, 2002. ISBN 4430 7077 6. 709 pp. £34.99. The sixteenth edition of Medical Microbiology has reached a significant milestone as it is 75 years since the first edition of Mackie and McCartney's An Introduction to Practical Bacteriology as Applied to Medicine and Public Health first appeared. There have been remarkable advances in medical microbiology in the intervening years; for example, antibiotics were unknown when the original text was published in 1925. The fifteenth edition was published in 1997 and in the past five years there have been many significant developments in medical microbiology, particularly in the areas of microbial genetics, pathogenesis and immune response to infection. The current edition addresses many of the developments in revised chapters, and there is a new chapter covering medical entomology. The book is divided into six parts and deals with viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites under the headings of microbial biology, infection and immunity, pathogens and their associated diseases, and the treatment and control of infection. There is an enormous wealth of information in the 709 pages of this excellent text. The wide range of topics presented is dealt with in a succinct manner and there is a uniformity of presentational style in the various sections, despite the fact that a variety of experts have contributed to the text.

Course Description
This course introduces basic concepts of infectious disease. The goals of the course are are for students to gain a basic knowledge and understanding of:
  • microbial diagnosis (the basis, sensitivity, and limitations of clinical diagnostic tests). etiology (infectious agents responsible, differential diagnoses – infectious or not). epidemiology (transmission, susceptibility, patterns). pathogenesis (how the organisms cause disease). symptoms (symptoms that help in diagnosis, how these symptoms relate to disease). prevention (vaccines, hand washing, etc.).
