Alternative medicine is the healing arts not taught in traditional Western medical schools that promote options to conventional medicine that is taught in these schools. Complementary medicine is different from alternative medicine. Whereas complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine, alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine.

Ancient Greek Medicine for Kids
Ancient Greek Medicine
A Greek doctor letting blood out of a patient Disease was a very serious problem for the Greeks, as for all other people in the ancient and medieval worlds. One out of three babies died before they were a year old. Half of all children died before they were ten. And even most people who grew up died in their forties and fifties. So the Greeks were very interested in using scientific observation and logic to figure out what caused diseases and what you could do about them. In the 300's BC and afterward, in the Hellenistic period, Greek doctors worked out a logical system for understanding disease. Their writings about this have been collected in the Hippocratic Writings, named after the first and most famous of these doctors, Hippocrates (hih-POH-krat-ees).
A leech This logical system began with the idea of humors. The doctors believed that people were made out of four substances: blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm (pronounced FLEM) (means boogers). If you were healthy, that was because your four humors were balanced. You had the right amount of each one. But if you had too much of one humor, you would be unbalanced and you would feel ill. For instance, if you had too much blood, that would give you a fever. So your medical treatment should be to reduce the amount of blood in your body. Greek doctors did this by cutting your arm until blood ran out. This was supposed to help bring down your fever. Or they put leeches on your arm to suck the extra blood out. They did this so often that doctors were sometimes called "leeches". And they thought it was such a good idea that doctors were still letting blood about 150 years ago!

; document.write(''); One of the major reasons behind Pfizer's (PFE) interest in acquiring Wyeth (WYE) is the latter's focus on products outside of traditional pharmaceuticals 窶 with 60% of Wyeth's revenue from last year derived from biological therapeutics and vaccines. It remains to be seen what happens to Wyeth's proposed deal to acquire Dutch vaccine maker Crucell (CRXL); however since it is much smaller (around $1B) and focuses on the development of vaccines, Pfizer would likely be interested in both companies together.

Access to Medicine Index
Encouraging global access to healthcare 12 July 2010 Access to medicine is a basic right, yet each year millions of people die due to preventable and treatable diseases such as HIV, malaria and tuberculosis. Others suffer needlessly due to chronic or neglected diseases, illnesses that could be eliminated but remain untreated. Improving access to medicines could save millions of lives each year. The Access to Medicine Index (funded by DFID, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other investors) aims to help tackle this situation by increasing the transparency of how pharmaceutical companies perform in meeting the health needs of the poor. Created and published by the Access to Medicine Foundation, the Access to Medicine Index works by ranking 20 of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies on their efforts to make sure that medicines are made for, and reach, people in developing countries. The Index is an independent and transparent assessment of company performance in doing this. Companies have incentives to improve their position on the Index; their ranking is important to their reputations as responsible companies; and, increasingly, large institutional investors see engagement with developing countries as an important factor in long-term corporate performance. The Index also means DFID can assess the impact of its work with companies on strengthening their contribution to better access to medicines for the poor.

European Drug Companies Lead 'Access to Medicine Index'
Independent Ranking Shows More Transparency, More Programs for Low-income Countries
AMSTERDAM June 20, 2010 /PRNewswire/ European pharmaceutical companies outcompete their U.S. counterparts in making medicines available to people in developing countries, but their lead is shrinking, according to the second Access to Medicine Index, released today. Compared to 2008, when the first Index was published, pharma companies have given more insight into their policies and actions to increase people's access to medicines in developing countries, researchers say in a report underpinning the ranking. They identify more industry initiatives than two years ago, but also see room for improvement. "The Access to Medicine Index independently assesses how individual pharmaceutical companies perform in promoting universal access to essential medicines, and is thus an important tool in improving performance," said Dr
