A lectures in medieval history, by Lynn Harry Nelson, Emeritus Professor of Medieval History, The University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Nelson examines the divisions in society and how the lives of individuals in the difference classes were effected.

Lectures in Medieval History
The Sundering of Society, 1350-1500
The 14th and 15th centuries saw the splitting of most of the classes of medieval society into a powerful elite and a powerless mass.
THE ARISTOCRACY
There were 5000 feudal warriors in England in 1100, and only 40 peers (lords) in 1500. The mass of the aristocracy were country knights allied with the middle class of the towns. The reasons for this split were numerous:
  • chivalry grew increasingly costly.
  • Largesse became more ostentatious and a more important status symbol; many could not afford it.
  • The fighting aristocracy lost their importance because of gunpowder, infantry formations, and standing armies.
  • Many noble families were wiped out by the 100 years' war and the civil wars that followed.
  • The upper middle class was now buying up land, and there was less wealth in the aristocracy to support a large warrior class.
  • The kings were less dependent upon the aristocracy for military or bureaucratic services.
  • The economic recession in many regions impoverished the local aristocracy.
The aristocracy split into the great magnates and the local squires. The magnates abandoned the practice of enfeoffing vassals in favor of paying salaried servants.

The Later Roman Empire
The reforms of Diocletian and Constantine "preserved" the empire, but changed it radically.
The Reforms of Diocletian (284-305 d. 311)
Before you plunge into a consideration of Diocletian's reign, you might be interested to know that much of the great palace he built for himself in ex-Yugoslavia is still sufficiently intact to provide one with a good idea of how the rulers of the Roman empire lived. You might want to visit it and look around. Political a. He divided the empire into two independent parts, leaving an impoverished and vulnerable western empire. Note that the Western empire had by far the longer frontier to defend, and a much smaller tax base with which to pay for its defense. b. Established the Augustus-Caesar policy of succession. Under this system, there were two emperors ( Augusti ), each of whom appointed a Caesar to defend the frontiers. When an emperor died, his Caesar was supposed to succeed him, take over his administration, and appoint a Caesar to defend the frontiers and eventually succeed to the emperorship. This was an attempt to create a stable form of succession which had been the weakness of the original empire but it failed. c. Made the provinces smaller and appointed both a civil and military governor over each. This generally increased government interference at local level and took affairs out of the hands of the middle classes of the provinces. Once they no longer had an important role in the governing of the empire, the imperial administration was able to tax the urban middle classes to the point of destroying them, at least in the western empire.

This project is both very large and fairly old in Internet terms. At the time it was instigated (1996), it was not clear that web sites [and the documents made available there] would often turn out to be transient. As a result there is a process called "link rot" - which means that a "broken link" is a result of someone having taken down a web page. In some cases some websites have simply reorganized sub-directories without creating forwarding links. Since 2000, very few links to external sites have been made. An effort is under way to remove bad links.

December 6, 1952 The President Truman
Washington, D. C. Sir: For several years it has been my privilege to serve as one of the editors and authors of The Army Air Forces in World War II , a history published on a non-profit basis under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Air Force and the University of Chicago. One of my tasks for the fifth volume, now in press, was to write an account of the atomic bomb attacks against Hiroshima and Nagasaki . In respect to the decision to use the bomb I have been faced with an apparent discrepancy in the evidence which I have been unable to resolve, and, in spite of a reluctance to intrude upon the time of the President, I am turning to you for information for which you are the best and perhaps the sole authority. I have read with great interest your own statements - that released on 6 august 1945 and that contained in your letter to Dr. Karl T. Compton, dated 16 December 1946 and published in the Atlantic Monthly of February 1947. I have read also the late Mr. Stimson's more detailed account in Harper's Magazine of February 1947 which is in perfect accord with yours - the gist being that the dread decision for which you courageously assumed responsibility was made at Potsdam "in the face of" Premier Suzuki's rejection of the warning contained in the Potsdam Declaration of 26 July, and that the motive was to avoid the great loss of life that would have attended the invasion of Kyushu scheduled for November.
