Traditio
Traditio celebrates in 1995 fifty years of achievement as a leading journal of ancient and medieval history, thought, and religion, drawing on contributions from European and American scholars. Originally a place of refuge for scholars from war-torn Europe, it has become a distinguished meeting place for original scholarly work from around the world. The 1995 issue of Traditio celebrates that past in several ways, but also importantly welcomes the future with this WWW site. Presented here are the introductory essay from that fiftieth anniversary volume, and two important tools for accessing the achievement of the journal:
  • Index of volumes 1-50 by Subject
  • Index of volumes 1-50 by author The editors of Traditio in 1995 are:
    Charles H. Lohr
    Elizabeth A.R. Brown
    Brian E. Daley
    James J. O'Donnell

"The contrast between silence and sound, darkness and light, like that between summer and winter, was more strongly marked than it is in our lives. The modern town hardly knows silence or darkness in their purity, nor the effect of a solitary light or a single distant cry. All things presenting themselves to the mind in violent contrasts and impressive forms, lent a tone of excitement and of passion to everyday life and tended to produce that perpetual oscillation between despair and distracted joy, between cruelty and pious tenderness which characterize life in the Middle Ages." - J. Huizinga (1872-1945)

    Why Study Ancient World Cultures?
An Essay by Bill Hemminger The question that initiates this program is a broad one: Why study ancient cultures? You might feel that the question is moot: students do study and will study ancient cultures; such study is an expected part of a tradition of intellectual development. The response to the why of the initial question is a matter of tradition, if not fact. A study of the ROMAN EMPIRE a reading of Greek philosophy and literature, a look at the PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT these are all accepted parts of a Western education, aren't they? Probably so: even today, in the plurality of approaches to the study of history and to the study of cultures, people talk about PLATO or DANTE or Krishna or Mohammed. But there is an important proviso: How you approach ancient cultures (or any other culture, for that matter) and how you conceive of the people of such distant worlds are of paramount importance. At this point, you might ask yourself these two additional questions: Do we study these cultures because, to some extent, all cultures share certain characteristics? Does our own culture reflect aspects of these other cultures? The answer to the first of the two questions has historically been found in a discussion of universality. Consider, for a moment, the case of Arjuna in

I'm at that stage in the week where I'm almost convinced I might have too much paper. You know, that moment when paper spawning has happened and paper reduction has not? I'm up late anyway, doing this and that so I'll have a clear run to get big stuff done tomorrow and have everything ready for Sydney so that when I get back I can get stuck into reviewing and research.
Also housework. Because I can see things I couldn't see before and this means cleaning must be done. There's a lot more housework when the fuzz on surfaces turns out to be dust and not due to the eye problems.
Tonight I was going to get much sleep, but it's proven impossible. If I can't get much sleep, at least I shall deal with much paper. That way I shall wake up to a less worrying world. Make Notes 16th November, 2010. 12:59 am.
I just spent a half day and a whole evening doing fairly drudging work and wondering why I couldn't stop. Five hours ago I had what I went in for, but I still I kept analysing the bibliographies I did earlier in the year and considering what I needed to work with next. Line by line by line, for hours. Those bibliographies are the background research for the novel (I have a whole other set for the dissertation - I do like my bibliographies), so the bit of my brain that was bored to tears was applying it to the novel and saying "You're not even ready for this until next year. Go do something useful."

My thanks to all who have contributed. Particular thanks to Michael W J Parle of Co. His work forms the basis of this website. To all Parles: if you would like a page focussing on a particular topic or Parle family group, please let me know. This website was originally put together in 2003. There have been some additions since then and I hope to add more data in the near future. Michael A Parle
