TABLE OF CONTENTS Histories of medieval philosophy tend to start with St. Augustine (354-430), if not earlier, but Augustine was of the late Roman Empire, centuries before the Middle Ages, and is included in such works not because he was a medieval thinker but because he cast such a long shadow across medieval philosophy. For our purposes here, we will go back further than Augustine's time and consider medieval philosophy to begin as ancient Greek philosophy withers into the distance.

Medieval philosophy
Medieval philosophy is the philosophy of Europe in the era now known as medieval or the Middle Ages , the period roughly extending from the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century A.D. to the Renaissance in the sixteenth century. It is defined partly by the process of rediscovering the ancient culture developed in Greece and Rome in the classical period, and partly by the need to address theological problems and to integrate sacred doctrine with secular learning.
The history of medieval philosophy is traditionally divided into two main periods: the period in the Latin West following the Early Middle Ages until the twelfth century, when the works of Aristotle and Plato were preserved and cultivated and the 'golden age' of the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in the Latin West, which witnessed the culmination of the recovery of ancient philosophy , along with a reception of its Arabic commentators , and significant developments in the field of Philosophy of religion Logic and Metaphysics
The medieval era was disparagingly treated by the Renaissance humanists, who saw it as a barbaric 'middle' period between the classical age of Greek and Roman culture, and the 'rebirth' or

Week 11: Medieval elements in Descartes
R.J. Kilcullen
This is cassette 11, concerned with the medieval elements in Descartes Meditations The Meditations , outlining the argument and drawing attention to the medieval material. The Meditations was first published in 1641, in Latin; it was translated into French by someone else, and the French edition appeared some years later with Descartes' approval. Notice that the most authentic text is the Latin edition. Before publication Descartes arranged for copies of his little book to be circulated to some well-known philosophers and theologians in Paris. They wrote objections, and he wrote replies. The objections and replies formed volume 2 of the Meditations . The objectors included Thomas Hobbes, Antoine Arnauld and Pierre Gassendi.
Descartes' purpose
In the "Dedication" of the work (it is dedicated to the members of the faculty of theology in Paris), Descartes says why he wrote the book. I quote from the translation of Haldane and Ross: I have always considered that the two questions respecting God and the Soul were the chief of those that ought to be demonstrated by philosophical rather than theological argument

Medieval Philosophy
Having devoted extensive attention to the development of philosophy among the ancient Greeks, we'll now cover more than a millenium of Western thought more briefly. The very name "medieval" (literally, "the in-between time") philosophy suggests the tendency of modern thinkers to skip rather directly from Aristotle to the Renaissance. What seemed to justify that attitude was the tendency of philosophers during this period to seek orthodoxy as well as truth. neoplatonism philosophy of Plotinus seemed to provide the most convenient intellectual support for religious doctrine. But later in the medieval era, thanks especially to the work of the Arabic-language thinkers, Aristotle 's metaphysics gained a wider acceptance. In every case, the goal was to provide a respectable philosophical foundation for theological positions. In the process, much of that foundation was effectively absorbed into the theology itself, so that much of what we now regard as Christian doctrine has its origins in Greek philosophy more than in the Biblical tradition.

The first truly great medieval philosopher was Augustine of Hippo , a North African rhetorician and devotee of Manichaeanism who converted to Christianity under the influence of Ambrose and devoted his career to the exposition of a philosophical system that employed neoplatonic elements in support of Christian orthodoxy. Description
Sir Anthony Kenny continues his magisterial new history of Western philosophy with a fascinating guide through more than a millennium of thought from 400 AD onwards, charting the story of philosophy from the founders of Christian and Islamic thought through to the Renaissance. The middle ages saw a great flourishing of philosophy, and the intellectual endeavour of the era reaches its climax in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with the systems of the great schoolmen such as Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus. Specially written for a broad popular readership, but serious and deep enough to offer a genuine understanding of the great philosophers, Kenny's lucid and stimulating history will become the definitive work for anyone interested in the people and ideas that shaped the course of Western thought.

    PHIL252 Medieval Philosophy
    INTRODUCTION
R.J. Kilcullen "The Middle Ages" refers to the period of European history from the end of the Roman Empire in Italy until the Renaissance, i.e. from the 5th century A.D. until the 15th. Philosophers during this time included Boethius, Anselm, Peter Abelard, Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, William of Ockham and many others. During the 12th and 13th centuries European philosophy was much influenced by the writings of Muslim philosophers including Avicenna (ibn Sina) and Averroes (ibn Rushd). Philosophy in the medieval style continued into the late seventeenth century; Descartes and Leibniz cannot be well understood without some knowledge of medieval thought. PHIL252 is concerned with medieval thought from Boethius to Thomas Aquinas, PHIL360 Later Medieval Philosophy with the period from Duns Scotus, including the medieval elements in 17th century philosophy.
    I SOME HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
    The Hellenistic Period
From Plato's time there had been opposition between philosophy and rhetoric - between philosophy, mathematics, science, medicine on the one hand, and rhetoric and literary studies (poetry, drama, history) on the other. Except in Alexandria, Hellenistic culture was in the rhetorical tradition: as was that of ancient Rome, of Byzantium of Europe until the 12th century, and of the European Renaissance of the fifteenth century. Greek philosophy and science was taken up in Islamic countries, and in Europe between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries.
