eNVy: A Non-Volatile, Main Memory Storage System (Wu, Zwaenepoel, 1994)
  • They use large flash memory to replace disk drives. For backwards compatibility they use a RAM Disk. Uses word size reads and writes to avoid using files and data formatting. Uses battery-backed up SRAM as a FIFO Write Buffer, to avoid long latency writes, reduce number of writes to flash, and make it word writable. Results are simulated. Complex cleaning algorithms are used to recover used flash segments.

    Abstract:
Various technologies and techniques are disclosed for using transactional memory hardware to accelerate virtualization or emulation. One or more central processing units are provided with transactional memory hardware that is operable to accelerate virtualization. The transactional memory hardware has a facility to maintain private state, a facility to render memory accesses from other central processing units visible to software, and support for atomic commit of the private state. The transactional memory hardware can be used, for example, to facilitate emulation of precise exception semantics. The private state is operable to enable an emulated state to remain inconsistent with an architectural state and only synchronized on certain boundaries. An optimized sequence of instructions is executed using chunk-accurate simulation to try and achieve a same end effect.
    Claims:
A system comprising:a central processing unit, the central processing unit comprising transactional memory hardware that is operable to accelerate virtualization.

University of Southern California professor Theodore W. Berger, whose work we've previously blogged, is making headway on an implantable chip that functions like the hippocampus. That's the part of the brain that creates memories for storage. "The team expects it will take two to three years to develop the mathematical models for the hippocampus of a live, active rat and translate them onto a microchip, and seven or eight years for a monkey. They hope to apply this approach to clinical applications within 10 years. If everything goes well, they anticipate seeing an artificial human hippocampus, potentially usable for a variety of clinical disorders, in 15 years." To provide a better user experience with smoother audio and video playback, use more SDRAM to buffer more audio data and video data. Additionally, an NMD that has more SDRAM can run more applications in parallel on the target device. The following table shows the required and recommended amounts of SDRAM for an NMD and for a digital video recorder (DVR).
SDRAM requirement level NMD DVR Required 32 megabytes (MB) 32 MB Recommended 64 MB 128 MB ROM or Flash Memory ROM or flash memory stores the operating system (OS) and the application software. The bit width of your ROM or flash memory must be either 16 or 32. You can use NAND-based or NOR-based flash memory. You can use other media, such as a hard disk drive, to store the run-time image. Keep in mind that due to moving parts, hard disk drives are less reliable than solid-state media.

    Shared memory
    - In computer hardware , shared memory refers to a (typically) large block of random access memory that can be accessed by several different central processing units (CPUs) in a multiple-processor computer system. The issue with shared memory systems is that the many CPUs need fast access to memory and will likely cache memory. Direct memory access - Direct memory access (DMA) allows certain hardware subsystems within a computer to access system memory for reading and/or writing independently of the CPU. Many hardware systems use DMA including disk drive controllers, graphics cards, network cards, and sound cards. Distributed shared memory - Distributed Shared Memory (DSM), in computer science, refers to a wide class of software and hardware implementations, in which each node of a cluster has access to a large shared memory in addition to each node's limited non-shared private memory. Physical memory - The memory hardware (normally RAM) installed in a computer. The term is only used in contrast to logical memory.

I have a laptop for which, sans swap file, Ubuntu won't even boot and yet I have installed Open SuSE on it. Never mind what the 'systems requirements' say. System Memory Hardware For Your Computer
    By: Dale Viviano
Though computers are getting better and better, and most of them are faster than they have ever been, there is always a problem with system memory. Though this seems to be limitless in newer computers, there are times when even the best computer will have to be shut down to regain free memory. I’m not really sure how this works, but I have a basic idea of what is going on and how to fix it.
The best thing about running out of system memory is that there is a very simple fix. Most of the time, all a person has to do is to turn off their computer and turn it back on. There are different types of system memory, and this works for the memory that it used for applications and running programs, not for what is stored on the computer. Those are two different things. The memory that runs the computer will run out if a computer is on for too long.
You can usually tell when your system memory is too low because it will slow down and other odd things will start to happen. You might first notice that web pages or programs don’t react as quickly as usual, and that pictures will simply refuse to load up. This is usually about the time that the computer will warn you that you are running out of system memory. The simple fix is the restart button. Some computers can be on for days on end without a restart, but most will have to be restarted at least every other day for maximum performance.
