Meningitis Viral

MeSH Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord , known collectively as the meninges The inflammation may be caused by infection with viruses bacteria , or other microorganisms , and less commonly by certain drugs Meningitis can be life-threatening because of the inflammation's proximity to the brain and spinal cord; therefore the condition is classified as a medical emergency The most common symptoms of meningitis are headache and neck stiffness associated with fever confusion or altered consciousness , vomiting, and an inability to tolerate light ( photophobia ) or loud noises ( phonophobia ). Sometimes, especially in small children, only nonspecific symptoms may be present, such as irritability and drowsiness. If a rash is present, it may indicate a particular cause of meningitis; for instance, meningitis caused by meningococcal bacteria may be accompanied by a characteristic rash.

Meningitis: Transmission and Symptoms Meningococcal disease is transmitted through respiratory secretions (e.g., coughing and sneezing) and direct contact with persons infected with the disease. Oral contact with shared items such as cigarettes or drinking glasses, or intimate contact such as kissing could put a person at risk for contracting meningococcal disease. People identified as close contacts of a patient are at an increased risk for disease and should receive antibiotics to prevent meningitis. Many normal healthy people become carriers of these bacteria and often do not experience any symptoms. Instead, they develop natural antibodies to the bacteria. Very rarely, for reasons such as suppressed immunity or concurrent respiratory illness, the bacteria invades the body, causing disease. Meningococcal disease usually peaks in late winter and early spring. The disease can easily be misdiagnosed as something less serious, because symptoms are similar to the flu. The most common symptoms include high fever, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and lethargy. Once the disease has progressed, a rash can appear, usually on the arms or legs. Anyone with similar symptoms should contact a physician immediately. If untreated, often within hours of the onset of symptoms, the disease can progress rapidly and can lead to shock and death.

There are many different bacteria and viruses that can cause meningitis. In most instances, it is more common for these viruses or bacteria to cause some other illness, such as an ear infection, pneumonia or other illness. It is not known why one individual develops meningitis when others exposed to the same virus or bacteria don't get as sick, or don't get sick at all.

MedlinePlus meningitis. meningococcemia Meningococcal disease describes infections caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (also termed meningococcus). It carries a high mortality rate if untreated. Whilst best known as a cause of meningitis , widespread blood infection ( sepsis ) is more damaging and dangerous. Meningitis and Meningococcemia are major causes of illness, death, and disability in both developed and under developed countries worldwide. The disease's host/pathogen interaction is not fully understood. The pathogen originates harmlessly in a large number of the general population, but thereafter can invade the blood stream and the brain, causing serious illness. Over the past few years, experts have made an intensive effort to understand specific aspects of meningococcal biology and host interactions, however the development of improved treatments and effective vaccines will depend on novel efforts by workers in many different fields. The incidence of endemic meningococcal disease during the last 13 years ranges from 1 to 5 per 100,000 in developed countries, and from 10 to 25 per 100,000 in developing countries. During epidemics the incidence of meningococcal disease approaches 1000 per 1,000,000. There are approximately 2,600 cases of bacterial meningitis per year in the United States, and on average 333,000 cases in developing countries. The case fatality rate ranges between 10 and 20 per cent.
