About Child and Youth Mental Health
Research shows that the average overall community prevalence rate for mental disorders in children and youth is 15%. This means that in BC, approximately 140,000 children and youth experience mental disorders causing significant distress and impairing their functioning at home, at school, with peers, or in the community. These mental disorders include any anxiety disorder, conduct disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, any depressive disorder, substance abuse, pervasive development disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette's disorder, any eating disorder and bipolar disorder. To reduce the burden of suffering resulting from children's mental illness, child and youth mental health services are offered throughout British Columbia by the Ministry for Children and Family Development (MCFD). These services provide a wide range of community-based specialized mental health services to mentally ill children and their families.

Overview of the Florida Department of Corrections The Florida Department of Corrections is now the third largest state corrections system in the country and is considered a national leader in corrections due to its innovations and insistence on quality. Health Services is an integral and constitutionally required element in the Florida Department of Corrections’ services, and is responsible for the physical and mental care of all offenders in its care, custody, and control. To meet the mental health needs of all offenders we have several levels of care, including outpatient, and four levels of inpatient care: crisis stabilization, transitional care, infirmary care, and the Correctional Mental Health Institute (court ordered inpatient treatment). The patient population served is racially, culturally, and socially diverse. The racial composition is 50% African American, 46% white, 3% Hispanic, and 1% self-identified as other. Our interns work primarily with men but will also work with some male and female youthful offenders, and some adult females. Some patients have been physicians and lawyers, while others have little education and have been homeless. Sixty three percent of our inmates have not achieved General Equivalency Diploma (GED) preparation literacy skills. Some are from other countries and speak other languages, with a significant proportion speaking Spanish. About 5% of inmates are non-U.S. citizens, with the largest number coming from Cuba, Mexico, and various Central and South American nations.

Edit A comparison of the CONOR Mental Health Index to the HSCL-10 and HADS Measuring mental health status in The Oslo Health Study and the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study Ingvar Bjelland Grethe S. Tell Background: Cohort Norway (CONOR) containing blood samples and standardised health and exposure variables of about 170,000 subjects, is based on data from health surveys in different parts of Norway. In all participants mental distress is measured by seven questions modified after various mental health measure- ment instruments. The purpose of the present study was to examine the agreement between these questions - called the CONOR Mental Health Index (CONOR-MHI), and two previously validated instruments; namely the Hopkins Symptom Check List (HSCL-10) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Methods: The CONOR populations used for these comparisons were the Oslo Health Study and the Nord- Trøndelag Health Study. In this paper all participants aged 30, 40, 45, 59-60 and 75-76 years were included - that is 18,770 and 7,014 for the two studies, respectively. Internal consistency was estimated for HADS, HSCL-10 and the CONOR-MHI and factor analysis was performed for the latter. Correlations, also correc- ted for attenuation, between CONOR-MHI and the two others, were calculated. Different cut-off values for the CONOR-MHI were computed, based on prevalence estimates for depression/ anxiety measured by HADS (cut-off ! 8) and mental distress measured by HSCL-10 (cut-off ! 1.85). The aim of this paper is to identify independent psychosocial risk factors for subsequent reported new diagnoses of stroke in older women. Methods: A prospective cohort study of women initially aged between 70 and 75 years was first surveyed in 1996 and again in 1999. During this interval, from a final sample of 7839 participants, 174 women reported that a doctor had diagnosed them with stroke for the first time.
