    - A -
Acid Rain rain that is especially acidic as the result of water vapor condensing onto particles of sulfate or nitrogen oxide.
Adiabatic - changes in temperature caused by the expansion (cooling) or compression (warming) of a body of air as it rises or descends in the atmosphere
Advection - the horizontal transport of air , moisture, vorticity or other atmospheric properties; commonly used in describing the transport of moisture and temperature
Advection Fog - a type of fog that results from the advection of moist air over a cold surface and the cooling of the air to its dew point that follows; this type of fog is most common in coastal regions.
AFOS - the Automation of Field Operations and Services; AFOS is the computer system that links National Weather Service offices and other computer networks, such as the NOAA weather wire , to transmit weather information.
    AGL - above ground level.
Air - the mixture of gases that make-up the earth's atmosphere
Air Mass - a large body of air that has similar temperature and moisture characteristics.

    http://www.ciesm.org/about/history/index.htm
Madrid, November 1919. Working session chaired by HSH Prince Albert I of Monaco HISTORY The Origins: 1908 - 1919 The origins of the Commission go back to July 1908 when the 9th International Congress of Geography, meeting in Geneva, agreed to a proposal advanced by Prof. Vinciguerra that, in the interest of marine fisheries, it was opportune to promote the oceanographic exploration of the Mediterranean Sea. A special committee composed of Prince Albert I of Monaco (President), of Professors Cori (Trieste), Vinciguerra (Rome), Regnard (Paris), and of Cdr Navarete (Madrid) was mandated to lay the foundations of a future Commission of the Mediterranean. It is worth noting that at the same Congress the creation of a Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Atlantic was recommended, but history and fate decided otherwise.
They are pictured around and behind Prince Albert I in the photograph above. Explorations: 1920 - 1939 Five scientific committees are rapidly created to serve the Commission: Marine Physics; Chemistry; Meteorology; General Biology; Applied Biology (Fisheries). Among the very first recommendations of the Commission to its Member States figure the creation of marine stations, the consolidation of existing ones, the systematic exploration of the Mediterranean Straits, the preparation of a bathymetric map, and studies on the biogeography of "useful species".
