The Marine Mammal Center ( www.marinemammalcenter.org ), a nonprofit rescue and rehabilitation hospital headquartered in Sausalito, California, has partnered with IGISc to advance their rehabilitation and research activities through the use of geospatial technology. Two main projects are currently underway: post-monitoring of rehabilitated Guadalupe fur seals using satellite telemetry and spatial analysis of domoic acid intoxication in California sea lions. GIScience methods paired with a unique analytical framework is being applied to these studies, including: GIS habitat modeling, remote sensing imagery interpretation, and spatial statistics to characterize individual movement patterns, habitat use and/or stranding distribution.

Student understanding is often limited in meteorology. Every student knows when the sun is shining, and I have little doubt any kid couldn't tell you the weekend weather! But several discrepancies in student understanding in meteorology stand out. I often poll students at the start of a meteorology unit to check understanding of such topics as global warming and ozone layer depletion. I also ask simple questions such as

The basis of meteorology as a physical science will be investigated during this course. Many facets that compose the complicated story of weather will be studied including temperature measurements, air flow, pressure, density, elements of the atmosphere, heat transfer and radiation, greenhouse effect, ozone layer, humidity, atmospheric optics, and much more. Satellite and weather maps will be studied. Whenever possible, laboratory experiments will be done to demonstrate weather phenomena and concepts. Weather information via the internet and the World Wide Web will be presented.
Assignments: Each student will be expected to purchase a reading booklet at the time of registration or at the first class. This booklet will contain material that should be read before the beginning of the second class. For our typical course, there are two full eight hour days of classes, although other schedules are possible. There must be several days between the two full day classes to allow a project to be completed. Between the two classes, each student is required to research and build a project having to do with meteorology. The primary consideration is your understanding of the project, your ingenuity in producing it, and your description of how other teachers could also use it. A short typed description (perhaps only 2-3 pages) must be handed in giving resource material, instructions for building and using the item. A short discussion of how this project might be useful in the classroom would be appropriate. Also during the second class you will give a short (5-8 minutes) presentation to the class. A list of possible projects is given in the booklet, but each student is expected to do further research to improve on the ideas presented here. Do not just copy what is given here. Try to improve it.

Elementary meteorology and atmosphere lesson plans.
    See more about the atmosphere.
Good weather and atmosphere lesson plans begin with basic elements of meteorology. What kinds of things? Elements such as temperature and pressure.
What is so important about air pressure?
Begin these atmosphere lesson plans and air pressure experiments with a map entitled "barometric pressure today". This small sample includes a low pressure with a trough and two fronts. A warm front in red and a cold front in blue. The arrowheads show typical wind directions in a situation like this. Isobaric analysis help weather forecasters identify major features such as surface highs, lows, ridges and troughs. What are they all about? Lows are places where cloud patterns and fronts lie consistently. How does this work? They draw isobars, connecting points with equal pressure and do so for several levels until they get a pattern like the one in the drawing above. Want to really have fun with your students and do a great job? Design the class to show them how to do this. The pattern could look like the thin dark curves above with a central low or high value. Meteorologists rely on pressure maps and use them throughout their work.
