Mexico’s diverse geography enables visitors to plan the ideal getaway in the part of the country that most suits their interest. Much of northern Mexico is desert. The Chihuahua Desert is covers the center and eastern part of Mexico. The Sonora Desert extends from the center of Mexico to the Pacific Coast. Mexico City is arguable the largest metropolis in the world with a population of over 17 million people in the greater Mexico City area. Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and plays an important role in the political and economic development of the country. It is also the home to many historical points of interests including museums, churches, Spanish architecture and indigenous cultural sites. Surrounding Mexico City are a series of mountain ranges, raising the elevation of Mexico City to over seven thousand feet above sea level. Mexico's mountain ranges include the Sierra Madre Occidental in the east, the Sierra Madre Oriental in the west, and the Sierra Volcanica Transversal which lies to the south of Mexico City. One of the more famous mountain peaks in Mexico is Popocatepetl, which means “Smoking Mountain” in the Aztec language of Nahuatl.

In 1540, Spanish explorer Coronado searched the New Mexico area for gold, with no luck. Around 1600, Spanish settlers established Santa Fe as well as settlements along the Rio Grande, a major river that runs north-south through the state. Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, and New Mexico was ruled by Mexico for several short years before becoming a US territory following the US-Mexican War . New Mexico finally entered the Union as the 47th state on January 6, 1912. The first atomic bomb was tested in New Mexico in 1945, and scientific research continues to fuel the state's economy. Cattle ranches, chile pepper farms, and recreation are other major industries. New Mexico's history attracts tourists, who may visit Native American
