    Cancún, Mexico, a city in Quintana Roo State. It lies at the northern edge of Mexico's Yucatán peninsula on the Caribbean coast, about 800 miles (1300 km) east of Mexico City. The city occupies an island and nearby portions of the mainland. It is an internationally famous seaside resort. (For picture, The local economy is dependent upon tourism. Cancún has many hotels, shops, nightclubs, and beaches. Golf, scuba diving, snorkeling, and boat trips are popular activities. Nearby are Garrafon National Park and Xcaret, a park that is home to an aquarium, a museum, and a botanical garden. Several Mayan ruins are located outside of the city, including Tulum, Coba, and Chichen-Itzá. Cancún was a small fishing village before the Mexican government developed it into a resort area in the 1970's.
