  • Anaerobe
Anaerobe is a multi-disciplinary microbiology journal that provides a forum for research on the biology of anaerobic microorganisms. The journal focuses on life processes in strict anaerobes and anaerobic activities of facultative or microaerophilic bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Created for the international community, it addresses the needs of those working on a group of organisms of exceptional academic, environmental, industrial, economic, and medical importance. Anaerobe publishes original research articles, short communications, reviews and mini reviews at the invitation of the editor. Papers describing innovative methodologies, technologies, and applications are also featured. Examples of topics welcomed include pathogenesis, clinical infections, industrial processes, stress responses, evolution, environmental activities, food spoilage, bioremediation, and dental disease. Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials
Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials publishes papers on all aspects of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases and antimicrobials.

Current Level Previous Level What is microbiology? Microbiology is the study of living organisms too small to be seen with the naked eye - a diverse group of microscopic organisms ranging from viruses and bacteria to protozoa and fungi. Microbes can be useful, such as those that decompose dead plant and animal matter or those that can be harnessed to produce antibiotics or foods like cheese, bread and yogurt. Microbes can also be harmful, such as those that cause disease, spoilage, or contaminate water supplies. Microbes can live in almost any environment, from Antarctica to the very hot, very acidic springs of Yellowstone. Some microbes are key to the cycling of crucial nutrients like carbon and nitrogen in their environment. The study of microbiology is important to a number of fields including medicine, food science, agriculture and biotechnology. General microbiology is a broad field which looks at the basics of microbial structure, physiology, growth and diversity. Microbes come in a range of shapes and sizes as can seen by checking out some of the image links below. Links to some

    Applied Microbiology
Consulting soil scientists' involvement in bioremediation, wetland treatment, land application of wastewater, and septic systems hinges on an undestanding of soil microbilogical transformations. Glomalin, and Terra Preta/biochar, two of the most interesting recent developments in soil science, are microbiological in nature. NSCSS members' favorite links:

Appointments to the Research Councils 2011 11 November 2010 The Appointments Panels for Research Councils UK (RCUK) are inviting applications from suitably qualified academics and experienced individuals from the industrial, commercial, government and voluntary sectors, to fill a number of vacancies. Biodiversity in the 21st Century: Are we missing the target? 10 November 2010 Prof Georgina Mace stimulated lively debate about biodiversity targets and conservation at the British Library’s tenth TalkScience event on 09 November. The event which was co-sponsored by the Society of Biology drew a very broad audience to hear Prof Mace’s analysis of the emergence of biodiversity loss as a key issue; the development in 2002 of the target to reduce biodiversity loss by 2010, and this year’s admission that the target had not been achieved. Cooling the world with crops 10 November 2010 Europe and North America’s massive agricultural plantations could be harnessed to cool the globe in the face of global warming according to Dr Joy Singarayer, speaking at the Royal Society's Discussion Meeting: Geoengineering - taking control of our planet's climate.

  • What is the most common element (in % per gram dry weight of cells) in bacteria
  • Nitrogen Hydrogen Phosphorus Sulphur Carbon Check ALL of the reasons why bacterial populations can change their genetic makeup more quickly than the eucaryotic higher plants and animals)
  • Some can transfer DNA between different species Some can interchange genetic material by transduction (via phage) and conjugation They can grow and reproduce quickly under the appropriate conditions Some can exchange genetic materials by transformation They are haploid They can express recessive genes
  • Check Why is Escherichia coli the most commonly used indicator to predict the presence of pathogenic bacteria in water samples ?
  • It occurs commonly when the pathogenic Salmonella species are present It is always present when pathogens are present It survives longer in water than any pathogen It is a good indicator that faecal contamination of the water has occurred It is a very good indicator that protozoal pathogens may be present What is an oligotrophic microorganism ?

They are also the only primate thought to use echolocation, which they use to find grubs up to 2cm deep in a tree. Aye-ayes have a long, coarse coat of black or brown fur, tipped with white. Many, but not all of red and brown algae are multicellular. White-tailed Deer One of the most adaptable animals in the world, the white-tailed deer is found from near-arctic regions to the tropics. Its adaptability is reflected in its feeding habits: it browses and grazes on many kinds of grasses, weeds, shrubs, twigs
