Home Library Military History Companion Military museums began in Europe and it is on that continent that the greatest strides in their development have been made. Outside Europe, military museums have been established in many countries, notable ones being found in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa, but in the USA, despite a multiplicity of regimental corps and academy museums, there is as yet no national museum to enshrine that nation's long military tradition. Military museums fall into two principal categories, with a third category whose status is ill-defined. The two principal types are national military museums and regimental, or site-specific, museums of a non-national nature, such as those at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and at the US Military Academy West Point . The third category contains military collections which are themselves a significant part of larger collections, often with a site-specific or parochial focus, such as military items in stately homes or in municipal museums. They dont even seem to realize that their Peace museums are, in fact, military museums. Here I will focus on the places I have actually been to. Yushukan By far the most famous/infamous/notorious of Japanese military museums is Yushukan, the museum attached to Yasukuni Jinja (Yasukuni Shrine). This Shinto shrine has traditionally been where Japan s war dead have been memorialized. During WWII, soldiers who knew they were about to die would sometimes say something like meet you at Yasukuni to each other, and some units have planted cherry trees in the courtyard so their comrades' souls would know where to gather. Several decades after WWII, the shrine included the souls of several Class A war criminals in its roster. Ever since, any official visits to this shrine have been extremely offensive to Japan s neighbours. Prime Minister Koizumis visits have led to numerous diplomatic rows, especially with
