Military museums
For big bangs and tales of valour head to Winchester, home to one of the largest collections of military heritage outside London. From the colour and pageantry of great parades to stirring stories of heroism and sacrifice, delve into the rich history of some of the British Army's most famous regiments and the story of conflict around the world. Visit the collections of regimental history housed within the setting of the historic Peninsula Barracks. The army links to this site date back 2,000 years; in 43AD the Romans built an encampment here, Alfred the Great had his residence here and it was on this site that William the Conqueror laid the foundations for a castle in 1069. From as early as the 18th century there were army barracks on the site. By 1986 the last regimental depots had moved, but the military tradition lives on through the military museums. The Guardroom Museum , using historical artefacts and archives, describes the role of personnel administration in the army over the last four centuries. This specially designed addition to the story of the military heritage in Winchester is housed in a 19th century guardhouse at Peninsula Barracks.

. Thank You A museum dedicated to the history of the military's interaction with the Pacific peoples
An American veteran stood fascinated in front of the pre-war Sumay village photographs. He remembered the village during the 1944 liberation when its shell-shattered buildings were his only protection against the Japanese troops fighting them. His buddy had been killed here. A Japanese veteran told his story of being in the dugouts above Adelup at the Asan landing area when the Americans came across the reef. He offered his personal mementos for the museum collection. These are just two of the scenarios which play out weekly at the Marianas Military Museum on the Orote Point peninsula. One of Guam's three museums, this newest one is tied as closely to the heart strings of Guam's history as the other two. The museum is located in the area of the pre-war village of Sumay...near the site of the pre-war Marine Barracks on the cliff above, a placement there in 1899 which played such an integral part in the development of that fishing village to its place of pre-war island prominence. And that is the museum's mission: to educate visitors, civilian and military alike, on the history of the interaction the military has had on this area of the Pacific and its people in both war and peace. The mission statement reads in part , " To educate.... and help the people explore the history of the relationship between the United States Military and island people of the Western Pacific."

These are 105mm projectiles. A Jack Rose has written me that on the left is a high explosive round due to its pointed shape and fuse. The other two are anti-tank projectiles due to their shape, and probably had thin nose cone when fired to reduce wind resistance. The spot in the center of the base is to release the tracer element which helped in aiming later rounds. Usually the AT round is fired from a high velocity weapon, and since most or all UN 105 rounds were for howitzers, these are probably communist projectiles. The English description given is "82mm". Mr. Rose has added, "The two shell cases with all the holes are shell cases for a recoilless piece. I would guess from the looks that they are for a 75mm recoilless. They are labeled 82mm which is probably wrong. The only 82 mm I know of in the enemy arsenal was the 82 mm mortar. The perforations in the shell casings were to let the expanding gasses vent to the rear. The open rear end that pieces called throat blocks which could be changed to regulate the gas going to the rear. If too little gas went to the rear the rifle would recoil, if too much gas went to the rear the rifle would move forward toward the target. A rather impressive demonstration was to hang the piece on two wires and fire it. If properly adjusted there would be no movement of the piece.

1050 Old Pecos Trail - Santa Fe, NM 87501 - (505) 474-1670 Dedicated to the Preservation of Military History the Military Historical Foundation of New Mexico, Inc. and the Bataan Memorial Military Museum and Library The Museum was started by members of the New Mexico National Guard and interested citizens shortly after the end of World War II. The central focus of the Museum is the men of the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment which was sent to the Philippine Islands early in WWII to furnish anti-aircraft support to Clark Air Field and Fort Stotsenberg. The Regiment was divided to form the 515th Coast Artillery Regiment while in the Philippines. Both of the Regiments were lost to enemy action on Bataan when the Japanese overran the Philippines in 1942. The 200th consisted of just over 1,800 men when deployed. After three and one half years of captivity, only 1,000 were to return to the United States. Located at 1050 Old Pecos Trail in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Museum is housed in the original Armory from which the 200th was processed for entry into active service in 1941. The Museum operates under the auspices of a small non-profit foundation - The Military Historical Foundation of New Mexico, Inc. The Museum and Library serve as a “Learning Center” for all who choose to avail themselves of the materials located there. They work closely with various public and private school systems and especially welcome youth groups.
