13. Reparations Have Already Been Paid For Slavery

Reparations for Slavery:
They have already been paid
War is hell, you cannot refine it. W.T. Sherman The topic of reparations for American Black slavery has been much discussed, and that discussion is not over. I think that such reparations are not justified. Unlike most who argue against monetary reparations, I think they are not only possible (though difficult) but justif no other payment had yet been made.
However, reparations for slavery have already been made. The name of the reparations program was "The American Civil War." Consider the following facts
  • About 11% of the total population (counting men, women and children) of the 1860 United States was in military service for some portion of the war; from the Confederate States considered separately, about 13% of the total population was enrolled. Of those enrolled in military service, the vast majority were White and all were male.
Of the (overwhelmingly White) men enrolled in military units, Union and Confederate, 14% died of their wounds or of disease; another 11% were wounded but survived. In Confederate units, deaths approached 19% of the men enrolled, an order of magnitude higher than the death rate in any other American war. This amounted to an aggregate 550,000 dead and more than 400,000 wounded

The Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry regiment was one of the finest military unitsUnion or Confederateto see service during the War Between the States. Yet, that is not its only claim to fame. The Fifth Iowa was quite possibly unique in that it melded companies raised independently in four different states into a single cohesive regiment. (It might even be argued that the Fifth Iowa was birthed by companies from five different states; although Company L was raised in Missouri, it was initiated by the Governor of Illinois, who commissioned its officers.) On the February 25, 1864, Companies G, I and K were reassigned to the State of Minnesota, and organized as an independent battalion with Major Brackett in command. Two of the three companies, G and I, were reconstituted when the veterans and recruits of the Fifth Iowa Volunteer Infantry were consolidated with the regiment on August 18, 1864. Below you will see the locale from which each of the companies came. It is a testimony to the regiment's leadership that such disparate elements were able to perform together so superbly.

    18. About The Book
If military units, Union or Confederate, containing Cass County men, participated in a significant battle the roles of local participants is addressed.
    http://casscountyorderno11.com/about-the-book.html
Between Three Fires: Cass County, Mo., Chaos, and Order No. 11”
    Overview
: This history focuses on Cass County History from 1860 until the end of the Civil War. The narratives's primary focus details events leading up to and following Quantrill's Lawrence Raid and the impact of Order No. 11. General Focus The research and narrative focuses on families living in Cass County in 1860. There were approximately 1,700 households in the county when the census was taken. The history's investigation and research has tracked, where possible, the stories of each of these 1,700 families. Geographic Focus : Quite specifically, the book focuses upon Cass County, Missouri. Cass County sits south of Jackson County, Missouri and east of Miami County, Kansas. Its location played a key role in the Border War as well as the Civil War. The county was included in the “District of the Border.” After Order No. 11 was implemented, families scattered across Missouri and to various other points in the United States. The book follows families along their various journeys.
Political Focus : In many respects, Cass County presents a microcosm of Missouri. Cass County's political polarization in 1861 is analyzed in detail. The evolution of the political power structure in the county is followed in detail and linked to statewide events.
