Mink
The American mink Neovision vison ) and other fur bearing animals attracted trappers, traders, and settlers to Alaska from around the world. Some of the most valuable furbearers belong to the Mustelidae or weasel family, which includes the American mink. Other members of this family in Alaska include weasels, martens, wolverines, river otters, and sea otters. Mink are found in every part of the state with the exceptions of Kodiak Island, Aleutian Islands, the offshore islands of the Bering Sea, and most of the Arctic Slope. General description: A mink's fur is in prime condition when guard hairs are thickest. Mink are then a chocolate brown with some irregular white patches on the chin, throat, and belly. White patches are usually larger on females and often occur on the abdomen in the area of the mammary glands. Several albino mink have been reported from Alaska. Underfur is usually thick and wavy, not longer than an inch. It is dark gray to light brown in color with some suggestion of light and dark bands. The tail is one third to one fourth of the body length with slightly longer guard hairs than the body. As an adaptation to their aquatic lifestyle, their feet have semiwebbed toes and oily guard hairs tend to waterproof the animal. Adult males range in total length from 19 to 29 inches (48-74 cm). They may weigh from three to almost five pounds (1.4-2.3 kg). Females are somewhat smaller than males.

Greek wildlife groups condemn mass mink release

France 24: Thousands of mink were released from two fur farms in Greece last week Four Greek wildlife groups on Monday criticised as "misguided" the mass release of thousands of mink into the wild from fur farms in northwestern Greece by an animal rights protest group. "Regardless of motive, the practice of releasing species foreign to an environment is harmful and can prove destructive," the four groups Anima, Arcturos, Callisto and the Hellenic Ornithological Society said in a text. "At a time when biodiversity is threatened by a series of problems, further taxing it with misguided forms of protest is to be condemned," the groups said. Thousands of mink were released from two fur farms near the towns of Kastoria and Siatista last week.

There really is no best place to view bears but Cades Cove and Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail tends to be a couple of the best spots to see bear. They are most active in the early morning and late evening. Chances are you will not come across an aggressive bear but if it should happen, the best thing to do is to make a lot of noise and slowly retreat. Only when dealing with a hungry human fed bear or disturbing a mother bear with her cub may bears become dangerous. Just remember you are seeing these bears in their habitat.
Other commonly seen wildlife in the Smoky Mountains includes groundhogs which are commonly seen along the road, five different types of squirrels, and the Cottontail rabbit. There are other mammals that are seldom seen mostly due to their being nocturnally active creatures.
Opossums, raccoons and skunks are often heard around campgrounds at night looking for food. If you are staying at a cabin in the woods of the Smoky Mountain area, you may also come into contact with one of these little creatures at night. Pictured here is a raccoon that came to visit us every evening while staying at a cabin here in the Smokies. There are also bobcats, red fox, gray fox, weasels and mink.
Snakes are common in the park and there are 23 different species including two poisonous types, the Timber Rattlesnakes and the Copperhead. Neither snake is aggressive and can usually be found in rocky areas. Staying on the hiking trails is the best way to avoid a confrontation with these reptiles. The most commonly seen species in the park is the eastern garter snake and the northern water snake.

Mustela vison Description: Range: Mink live statewide in Colorado but are most abundant in the mountains, near beaver ponds. The beaver pond provides still-water habitat and an abundance of food on the plains. Habitat: Mink live in burrows, dens of muskrats or tree hollows but are only weak burrowers. Diet: Mink primarily eat muskrats, nestling waterfowl, frogs, salamanders, fish, beaver kits and insects, crayfish may be a staple in season. Mink kill more food than they can eat at once, and excess food is stored, especially in winter. Reproduction: Breeding occurs in summer, but implantation of embryos is delayed. Gestation takes five to ten weeks, with one to six (usually four) young born in April or May. Newborns are tiny, but grow quite rapidly, doubling their weight five or six times to reach 40 percent of adult weight by the time they wean at seven weeks of age. Although coyotes, red foxes or great horned owls occasionally kill them, combat with other mink is a greater cause of death than all predators combined. Beyond that, harvest by humans for their beautiful winter fur is the strongest control on numbers of mink over most of their range. The leading cause of mortality for minks is the harvest by humans for their beautiful winter fur.

      Mink
The American mink is now an established (though not universally celebrated) feature of Britain's waterways. American mink first arrived in Britain way back in 1929. However, their long journey across the Atlantic ended at the commercial fur farms and it was not until the mid 1950s that Mustela vision became a common sight living wild around our canals and river banks.
Close up, American mink resemble something between a small cat and a ferret. They have a dense coat of deep brown fur, which often leads to cases of misidentification with the native otter. However, otters are shy animals unlikely to be seen during the day; quite unlike their confident American cousins who will wander the waterways at all hours. Mink are also smaller and slimmer than otters, factors which enhance their ability to hunt burrow-dwelling prey such as water voles. Mink were first reported to be breeding wild in the UK in 1956, and today it is virtually impossible to estimate the number of mink resident along the many miles of Britain's waterways. These efficient predators are solitary animals who will fiercely defend their waterside territories when necessary. Males will sometimes allow females to make their homes inside their vast territories, but no male mink worth his salt would tolerate another male within spitting distance.

    Weasel Family
Members of the weasel family vary greatly in size, appearance, and behavior, but they all have low-slung bodies, short legs, and short, rounded ears. Most are nocturnal, so the best time to look for them is at dusk and dawn. Weasel
Weasels are long and slender. They have brown bodies with white underparts and a black tip on the tail. In winter, they turn completely white except for the tail tip. Adult males are about 12 inches long (including the tail); females are half that size. Weasels spend most of their time on the ground hunting. Mink
Minks are long and thin, but larger than weasels. Adult males are 20-30 inches long (including the tail). Their bodies are chocolate brown to black except for white chin patches. They live and hunt on the ground near water and are good swimmers. Marten
Martens are taller and stouter than mink. Adults are about two feet long, including their long, bushy tails. They usually have orange or buff-colored throat patches. Secretive and elusive, martens spend most of the time in the trees and are rarely seen.
