National report finds Minnesota charter schools to be academically challenged
Share Comment Email Print Reprint rights By John Fitzgerald, Minnesota 2020 July 06, 2009 A Stanford University report finds that charter schools across the nation - including Minnesota - fall behind public schools in the quality of education they offer. The report found 17 percent of charter schools reported academic gains significantly better than public schools, while 37 percent of charter schools showed gains that were worse, and 46 percent demonstrating no significant difference. The report, "Multiple Choice: Charter School Performance in 16 States," is a national analysis that looks at more than 70 percent of the nation's charter school students. The analysis looks at achievement growth on state achievement tests in both reading and math with controls for student demographics and eligibility for program support such as free or reduced-price lunch and special education.

        A. Introduction Many folks may be wondering why an Examiner based in Seattle, Washington would be writing about charter schools. After all, the voters turned down authorization for charter schools and Washington is one of the few states without charter school authorization. Karin Piper, the Charter Schools Examiner assembled a team of volunteers to work on a national directory to be posted on the web. Rani Gordon, the Sioux Falls Frugal Family Examiner and I worked on the directory of Minnesota charter schools. Rani verified the list of Minnesota Charter School Alphabetical by County A-K and I verified the list from L-Z. At the Minnesota Association of Charter Schools site in the FAQ section the association defines what a charter school is in Minnesota and the difference between a charter school and public school. What is a charter school?

Print Send RSS The Minnesota Department of Education has received applications for three new taxpayer-funded charter schools. They include Howard and Mattie Smith Academy, a K-3, 9-12 school proposed for Minneapolis, named for two legendary preachers at Shiloh Temple Church. Another is The Academy, a 10-12 Minneapolis school, and the third is a 7-12 school, St. Paul Rising Sun. A new charitable organization, Minnesota Education Trust (MET), has applied to sponsor all three schools, and at one point sought to assume sponsorship of a fourth the Academy for Food Sciences and Agriculture, whose name evokes Minnesota's heartland. "Minnesota Education Trust" sounds pretty generic, but the name seems to convey a clear sense of the organization's mission. Or does it?

    About Me
    Robert W. Heiny
I try to assist people to unlock curiosity and ways to break social codes required for survival and success. I specialized in developing organizations that increase personal benefits. This specialty emerged while serving in senior faculty or research appointments at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and The Florence Heller Graduate School for Advanced Studies in Social Welfare at Brandeis University as well as while directing the Montana Center on Disabilities. Serving in the past as a partner in a high tech business allowed me to test such academic ideals in reality.
