In all of the outstanding universitiesand for the libraries that provide the foundations of their intellectual vitalitythe difference between adequacy and excellence lies in resources that have been added by private donors. By joining the Friends of the Libraries, you will provide the vital margin that all great libraries have: funds with which to acquire important research collections, new collections, and information technologies. Investments in collections and information technologies are essential to preserve the records of past scholarship, and to guarantee the availability of these materials for future generations of scholars. Our ultimate goal is to enhance learning and the discovery of new knowledge. Your annual membership will enable the Libraries to achieve this. All University of Minnesota students and faculty will benefit from your support, as will people throughout Minnesota who rely on the Libraries for information.

Research opportunities in English at the University of Minnesota Libraries
The University of Minnesota Libraries constitute one of the strongest research libraries in the United States. Holdings in English and American literature and related areas are generally reliable and include areas of unusual strength. The electronic catalogue, MNCAT , provides detailed bibliographical information about the collections, and also gives access to a large number of digitized texts, including primary texts and scholarly journals. For example, the following databases provide searchable access:
  • Early English Books Online (the texts of virtually all the books that were published in the English language between 1475 and 1700; in progress) Eighteenth Century Collections Online ("in essence, every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in the United Kingdom" between 1700 and 1800, along with "thousands of works published in the Americas"; in progress)
    Early American Imprints
("Digital Evans"; the texts of virtually all the books that were published in the United States from 1639 to 1800) Literature Online (a large number of literary texts that range from the early modern to the modern period, as well as numerous secondary works)

If you don't find what you are looking for in our library or one of the other SELCO libraries, then we would be happy to try and get it for you from other Minnesota libraries. Just give us a call or send us an email.
You can also search and request on your own, if you prefer - just go to the MNLink Gateway site and use your library card to log in. Please be aware that new items (published or released within the last year), especially DVDs, are often restricted and not available via MNLink.
