Minoan Pottery
Minoan Pottery
Minoan Pottery took a great part in gaining information about the Minoan Civilization. Archaeologists were able to find dates of certain events or eras, types of Minoan culture, and the different stages of Minoan civilization was found. Minoan pottery comes in many different forms and sizes along with patterns and style.
It has been discovered that Minoan pottery making started in the Neolithic times. (Neolithic meaning the "New" stone age. It was the time close to the Bronze Age). Pots were created for many reasons. The main reason was to store many things such as food, clothing, etc. Food such as cereal crops were kept in pots, clearly to keep for future needs. Pots were also used frequently for trade along the coastal Syria and in Egypt.
There is a hypothesis that people of the Minoan Civilization accidentally found out how to fire clay materials. The discovery could have been made by accidentally burning/firing a clay lined basket which later would have turned hard or even become refired. This could have made varieties of cooking methods for the civilization. Later on, pottery turned into an art form from the increase of decorations and style of making.

The Odyssesy gives a list of people living on Crete; among that group he lists are the "Eteo-Cretans," who are probably the original Minoans. This group persists as an independent group until around 140 BC; their language, Eteo-Cretan, was probably a near relative of the language of the Minoans. The Greeks called non-Hellenic languages "barbaric," from the word "barbar," which means "speaking nonsense" ("bar bar bar bar"). They called people who spoke barbaric languages, "barbarians"; so the Greeks in many ways distinguished themselves from other people by the language they spoke. The Eteo-Cretans, then, originators of Greek civilization itself, had become the barbarians in the Greek world.
bureaucratic monarchies . While the government was dominated by priests and while the monarch seemed to have some religious functions, the principle role of the monarch seemed to be that of "chief entrepreneur," or better yet, CEO of the Cretan state. For the Cretans operated their state as a business, and entrepreneurship seemed to be the order of the day. While the bulk of the population enjoyed the wealth of international trading, the circumstances of that trade was tightly controlled from the palace. Beneath the king was a large administration of scribes and bureaucrats who carefully regulated production and distribution both within the state and without. This administration kept incredibly detailed records, which implies that they exercised a great deal of control over the economy.

Fresco Showing a Minoan Woman Clipart.com zSB(3,3) Definition: The Minoans were a Bronze Age civilization of Ancient Crete whose early language, Linear A , we have not deciphered. Sir Arthur Evans , responsible for the excavations at Knossos, defined the Minoan period of Crete as a major civilization from c. 1900-1300 B.C. Besides Knossos, there were Minoan palace centers in Phaistos, and Kato Zakros that were destroyed, probably by an earthquake, in about 1700. The palace center at Knossos was subsequently rebuilt. An enormous palace filled with rooms and narrow passageways is thought to have given rise to the legend of the labyrinth, built by Daedalus, with the Minotaur at its center that Theseus successfully traversed with the aid of a ball of string given him by the Minotaur's half-sister Ariadne.
We believe the government of the Minoans was a bureaucratic monarchy.

    The Minoans
    Ancient Greece for Kids

The Greeks were great sailors. As the Greeks were out and about, sailing the Mediterranean Sea in search of food, trade, and adventure, they were also on the lookout for new places to build Greek cities and outposts. While sailing about, the Greeks stumbled across a tribe of people living on the island of Crete. These people, the Minoans, were a very advanced civilization for the times. They had a strong navy, which is probably why the Greeks never succeeded in colonizing the Minoan people.
The Minoan king lived in the capital city of Knossos, in a maze of a palace with 1500 rooms! It was a gorgeous palace. But during Minoan times, even poor people on the island of Crete had 4-room houses, with running water for drinking and bathing, and bathrooms that flushed! This was a very advanced civilization.
