Featuring antebellum mansions and extensive cotton fields, as well as ornamental Southern Magnolia trees and Civil War battlefields, Mississippi is known as the Magnolia State . Perhaps more than any other Southern state, Mississippi symbolizes the Deep South. The Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes occupied Mississippi when Hernando de Soto explored the area in 1540. Mississippi became the 20th state on December 10, 1817, but separated and became part of the Confederacy from 1861 until the end of the Civil War. Antebellum plantations, cotton fields, Civil War battlefields , and around a million African-American citizens in Mississippi serve as a reminder of the state's past. Although racism was especially fierce in Mississippi during the 1960s, many improvements have occurred over the past half-century. Historical sites in Mississippi are not limited to the Civil War era.

    The Geography of Multiple Sclerosis
In this and later sections, I'd like to explore some of the ways that multiple sclerosis has been observed to affect people. Much of this information is derived from statistical data and, as such, is subject to the vagaries and uncertainties inherent to statistics. In a later section, I shall explore the relationship between MS and statistics So who does get MS, then? This would be a much easier question if it were known what causes MS, but since that knowledge remains elusive, we can only look at the distribution of the disease around the globe and at the people who actually have it. World map of prevalence of MS MS is predominately a disease of temperate latitudes and of the western hemisphere. Principally, it is a disease prevalent in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Although MS is found in Japan, China and some other temperate, eastern countries, it is very much rarer than it is in the West. Regions north of 40 degrees latitude have a markedly higher incidence than those south of this divide. Within Europe, Scandinavia, The British Isles, the Low Countries and Germany have very high rates. Canada, northern USA and New Zealand have an equivalently high prevalence. Within these areas, certain localities such as the border areas of Scotland (203 per 100,000), Crowsnest Pass in Alberta, Canada (217 per 100,000), the northern-most province of Sweden (253 per 100,000) and others have been found to have extremely high incidences of the disease.

Mississippi , one of the East South Central states of the United States, bordered on the north by Tennessee, on the east by Alabama, on the south by the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana, and on the west by Louisiana and Arkansas. The Mississippi River forms almost all of the western boundary, and the Pearl River forms part of the southern boundary. Mississippi entered the Union on December 10, 1817, as the 20th state. Its economy was mainly agricultural until the middle third of the 20th century, when manufacturing became the dominant economic sector; service industries have become increasingly important in recent decades. Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, resided here. The name of the state is taken from that of the Mississippi River, the name of which is derived from an Algonquian Indian term for “big river.” Mississippi is called the Magnolia State. Land And Resources Mississippi, with an area of 125,443 sq km (48,434 sq mi), is the 32d largest state in the U.S.; 5.5% of its land area is owned by the federal government. The state is roughly rectangular in shape, and its extreme dimensions are about 530 km (about 330 mi) from north to south and about 290 km (about 180 mi) from east to west. Elevations range from sea level, along the Gulf of Mexico, to 246 m (806 ft), atop Woodall Mountain in the northeast. The approximate mean elevation is 91 m (300 ft). The state's coastline is 71 km (44 mi) long.
