Which Modem to use for ActiveFax
January 25, 2010
Q:
I need to setup ActiveFax for a client and wanted to know if you could recommend a low cost fax modem which works well with ActiveFax. The client has a limited hardware budget and would like to keep their costs down.
They have 20-30 users running on Windows 2003 and 2008 terminal servers. Using Woodpro. I did look at your page of recommended fax modems but I thought it would be worthwhile to inquire with someone directly in case the list had not been updated with new information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. A:
In general, I recommend not using low-cost modems (less than $ 50) for faxing, since such modems are normally very unreliable in fax mode and you often get aborted fax transmissions. I think the best choice in
your case is using a Multitech Multimodem-ZBA modem (see http://www.multitech.com/en_US/PRODUCTS/Families/MultiModemZBA/).

How many Brooktrout TR1034 boards can you support
September 30, 2008 Q: How many Brooktrout TR1034 boards can you support in a machine ? How many simultaneous faxes can you send at a time, I plan to have 4 1034 boards (96 channels)? A: In general the number of channels channels supported by the fax server is not limited, but for performance reasons I would strongly recommend to not use more than two TR1034-T1 boards (2  x 24 channels) in a single server. It would be better to use two servers with two T1 boards each in that case. ActiveFax Communication Group a division of INTERTRADE ENTERPRISES LTD :: Blegistr.25 :: CH-6340 Baar/Switzerland

I was recently trying to troubleshot the famous "infinite
loop" error with an ATI 8500DV video card. In doing so I
disabled ACPI in the BIOS and installed a clean version of
WinXpPro. I have noticed my "Network Utilization" is a
LOT higher than it was when it was enabled, when viewed
    under the Task Manager/Networking.
I have a cable modem and the service is through Comcast.
I have see utilization up to 33%, but on the average runs
around 6-8% depending upon the site I'm downloading from. Before diabeling ACPI it was in the .xx something, almost never ever above 1%. Didn't do anything for the "infinite loop" error, surprise, surprise!

PCI Modem : What is it?
    Types Of PCI Modems
Kinds of PCI Modems include the following:
    Hardware-based modems
    • Hardware-based modems perform all the functions on the card and operate independently from the operating system. They usually come with flash memory chips that download necessary operating codes to update the modem. They are more robust than software-based modems and usually last longer.

    Software-based modems
    • Software-based modems come with computer programs that perform most of the connection functions. They are dependent on the operating system and use up system resources, which slows the computer down. They have limited compatibility and may not work with fully DOS-based online games.
    Choosing PCI Modems (Buying Tips)
Connection type: Choose a PCI modem that supports the type of connection you need. A 56K modem is good enough for email and general surfing, but a broadband or DSL modem is recommended if you download large files or view multimedia content.
Security: Choose a PCI modem with firewalls or filters to keep harmful files from entering your computer. Look for one that performs regular updates or works with the virus definitions on your antivirus program.

FAX A DRAFT PRESENTATION TO A CLIENT AND SHE'LL do one of two things. Either she'll fax back changes to you or call you up and try to describe them over the phone. That's why you still have one-on-one meetings where you and the client stare at an image onscreen while you discuss the relative benefits of suggested changes. Although regular meetings with a client are important, too many can cut into your productive hours. A new breed of modems just might help you to agree on changes without meetings. Digital simultaneous voice and data (DSVD) modems let you talk and transmit data at the same time over a single telephone connection. Although there are several potential uses for this capability, the most obvious business application is conferencing or white-boarding software that lets you link up with others in remote locations to collaborate on projects (see the accompanying box "Shared Work Gets Realistic "). Instead of traveling across town to show off a new design or to debate the virtues of reframing a proposal, you'd simply have your computer dial your client's computer and both of you would be looking at the same screenjust as if your client had come over to your office to review the work-in-progress.
