Neomodern
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search This article is about the architectural movement. For the philosophical movement, see Neomodernism The Bay Adelaide Centre in Toronto. When first proposed in the 1980s the building had a strongly postmodernist design. The final design, completed in 2009, adopted the neomodern style. Neomodern is a term used to describe a "new simplicity" in art and in reaction to the complexity of postmodern architecture and eclecticism . Neomodern is also used on occasion to simply denote the contemporary period, on the assumption that there is a new style distinct from the postmodern period. citation needed

An exhibition exploring the perception of ART and the identity of the ARTIST through HISTORY and in CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY Professor Christopher L. C. E. Witcombe FOURTH PART of a FIVE-PART ESSAY on MODERNISM I n the latter half of the 20th century there has been mounting evidence of the failure of the Modernist enterprise. Progressive modernism is riddled with doubt about the continued viability of the notion of progress, while conservative modernism in the United States has fallen prey in the political realm to the influences of the Church, in the form of the so-called religious right, which in recent years especially has seriously undermined the very constitutional foundations of the whole American enterprise. Since Suzi Gablik wrote her book, the communist experiment undertaken in the former Soviet Union has collapsed. Fundamentalism in nearly all of the world's major organized religions (Christianity, Islam, Hinduism) has risen sharply in recent years in direct opposition to modernism. American Christian fundamentalists still agree with Martin Luther who recognized that "Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it struggles against the divine word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God."

"Just as the ancients drew the inspiration for their arts from the world of nature...so we should draw ours from the mechanized environment we have created."
Manifesto of Futurist Architecture
Le Corbusier 's "Villa Savoye", 1929-30: The modern style is noted for its rigorous geometrical forms, and became adopted internationally, though not without continuing controversy The modern movement emerged in the late 19th century, and was rooted in the idea that "traditional" forms of art, literature, social organization and daily life had become outdated, and that it was therefore essential to sweep them aside and reinvent culture. It encouraged the idea of re-examination of every aspect of existence, from commerce to philosophy, with the goal of finding that which was "holding back" progress, and replacing it with new, and therefore better, ways of reaching the same end. In essence, the Modern Movement argued that the new realities of the 20th century were permanent and immanent, and that people should adapt to their world view to accept that what was new was also good and beautiful. Modernism in the cultural historical sense is generally defined as the new artistic and literary styles that emerged in the decades before as artists rebelled against the late

These two quotations have always epitomized Modernism to me.
  • I see Modernsim as a reaction to a number of discontinuities suffered at the end of the nineteeth century crucial disruptions in conventional ways of thinking that threw old explanations, moral systems, and deologies into question and required the creation of new ideas of order. These new forms of order were typically more individualistic, more relativistic, more abstract, and more techological than previous ways of thinking.

    Teaching
My first full-time teaching experience was as a lecturer at the University of Virginia, during the 1988-89 academic year. I taught three different courses each semester, on modernism, postmodernism, art and mass culture , American fiction of the '70s and '80s, Modern Thought, and Modern American literature. Some of these were small honors seminars, some were classes of thirty or so, some were large lecture courses. I found the experience exhilarating and exhausting, writing out every word of each lecture for as many as eight class meetings during a week. I'm afraid my delivery of these lectures was probably less than compelling, but I enjoyed the discussion periods and I learned a great dealnot least, the importance of experience and preparation in achieving spontaneity and flexibility in the classroom. I had taught some composition classes in the department's computer classroom (sixteen stand-alone PCs with word-processing software), and though the experience left me fairly cold, it apparently qualified me to teach engineers. During the Christmas break of the 1992-93 academic year, I learned (through a networked discussion group to which I belonged) of the existence of text-based, real-time virtual reality programs called MOOs. I visited one, and I immediately saw teaching applications for these programs. Over the next two weeks, I spent about a hundred hours learning MOO programming, and I set up a copy of the program at NCSU, as the "Virtual Campus." I used it, in the spring of 1993, to teach my two composition classes, with remarkable results. A copy of the syllabus, which explains the narrative and functioning of those classes, is available

    Impressionism
Impressionism is a light, spontaneous manner of painting which began in France as a reaction against the restrictions and conventions of the dominant academic art. The hallmark of the style is the attempt to capture the subjective impression of light in a scene. The core of the Impressionist group was made up of Claude Monet Pierre-Auguste Renoir , and Edgar Degas
    Artists and Articles
    Claude Monet
Claude Monet , French painter, is generally considered to be the most outstanding figure among Impressionists. The term Impressionism derives from his picture Impression: Sunrise . Monet was using the short brush strokes, which often looked rather like spots of paint, not lines. For this reason his paintings seemed to some people messy and unfinished. Often, when you looked at his painting from a short distance you couldn't see what it was, but if you stepped away you could see a beautiful scene. This was a completely new way of painting that became the mark of Impressionism . Monet was enormously prolific and many major galleries have examples of his work. Through his life Monet painted about paintings. For many years Monet's and other Impressionists' paintings were not understood and rejected by people of that time. But finally by the end of century the new way of painting became liked and popular. Impressionism enriched art, and taught people to be open and ready to welcome and enjoy the new styles. Claude Monet, as the leader of Impressionists, made this success possible in the big part. Without Claude Monet art would probably never become so interesting, and full of light, and beauty.

    Romanticism
Romanticism emerged as a reaction against Neoclassicism. It did not really replace the Neoclassical style, and many artists were influenced by both styles. It stressed strong emotion, legitimized the individual imagination as a critical authority, and overturned some previous social conventions. Although Romanticism and Neoclassicism were philosophically opposed, they were the dominant European styles for generations, and many artists were affected to a lesser or greater degree by both. Artists associated with Romanticism are Ivan Aivazovsky , Caspar David Friedrich, John Constable, Eugene Delacroix, and Francisco de Goya

    Ivan Aivazovsky
Ivan Aivazovsky , a Russian Armenian painter, most famous for his seascapes , which constitute more than half of his paintings. Aivazovskiy had a vivid and emotional understanding of reality. He always remained a romantic at heart even through his art could never separate itself from his academic background. The artist's expressive language was in complete harmony with the techniques that he used. As a young boy Aivazovskiy had known the sea, had loved it passionately and had known the secrets of its movements. It was this memory, together with his imagination, that was responsible for his best works. Rather than merely "reproduce" the sea, Aivazovskiy tells us its fables and thus makes a symbolic statement.

Flash Mobs, Shopdropping, and Other Ad Hoc Art Forms
Santa Babies One Saturday before Christmas after my merry rounds uptown, searching here and there in galleries for art rather than looking at art, I was on my way back to my East Village lair, when.... I was treated to the spectacle of multiple Santas. They were hanging out on historic St. Mark's Place. This uncomely but vital boulevard, once the home of the Dom and Andy Warhol's Plastic Floating Inevitable, is now a battleground between bustling tattoo parlors (Whatever Tattoo, Dots NY, et al.) and serenely empty, mostly Asian, supermodern fast-food franchises, looking like beta versions of concepts ready to take over the post-dining world: Good Dog, Very Berry, T Kettle, Pinkberry. BAM Automat is the exception. It's a glistening stand-up with little coin-liberated windows offering slider-size burgers, corn dogs, macaroni and cheese, fried Spam, and the $2 grilled cheese sandwiches that are much too much my favorite grab. The largest gaggle of Santas, however, was in front of a bar near Kim's, my essential video provider. Santas not outside the saloon smoking were inside hoisting tankards of beer or throwing back the potent contents of shot glasses. It obviously takes a great deal of liquid reinforcement to parade around in a Santa suit in broad daylight. My digital at hand, I snapped away. I don't know if this was before or after the Santas were instructed by text-messaging to dance their brains out further east in Tompkins Square, where once in the Roaring '60s there was a Be-In.

    Divorce in Art
First multiple Santas in the last Artopia posting and now multiple Fabiolas! But multiplicity wasn't invented yesterday, nor by Andy Warhol when he multiplied his Campbell's soup cans, Marilyns, and Jackies. Think instead of the myriad figures in a Tibetan tanka. Or those dying genres, photo-booth samples and sheets of postage stamps. Admittedly the photo-booth samples are usually images of many different grimacing customers or one-off strips picturing singles or couples in a variety of poses. Andy Warhol based some of his silk-screened portraits on photo-booth pictures (art dealer Holly Solomon, for one), but I am not sure any booths survive. In terms of Warhol, it was not new to make the same painting over and over. In some sense, Ad Reinhardt was already doing that with his all-black paintings, and almost any artist committed to exploiting a signature image could be so accused. What Warhol did that was different was to lay out silkscreened variants of a single image as one artwork. Some might say that the subject did not matter, it was the repetition that counted. Dumb repetition was the real subject. Belgian-born Francis Alÿs, presently living in Mexico, until now has been most noted for his Dia-sponsored
