What Is Molecular Biology?
Molecular biology is the study of biology at a molecular level. The field overlaps with other areas of biology, particularly genetics and biochemistry. Molecular biology chiefly concerns itself with understanding the interactions between the various systems of a cell, including the interrelationship of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and learning how these interactions are regulated. Writing in Nature, W.T. Astbury described molecular biology as: "... not so much a technique as an approach, an approach from the viewpoint of the so-called basic sciences with the leading idea of searching below the large-scale manifestations of classical biology for the corresponding molecular plan. It is concerned particularly with the forms of biological molecules and ..... is predominantly three-dimensional and structural - which does not mean, however, that it is merely a refinement of morphology - it must at the same time inquire into genesis and function" [Nature 190, 1124 (1961)] Researchers in molecular biology use specific techniques native to molecular biology (see Techniques section later in article), but increasingly combine these with techniques and ideas from genetics, biochemistry and biophysics. There is not a hard-line between these disciplines as there once was. The following figure is a schematic that depicts one possible view of the relationship between the fields:

Molecular Biology is the basic science that seeks an understanding of life processes in terms of the properties and functions of molecules that make up living cells. The scope of questions addressed in Molecular Biology ranges from evolution to development to the regulation of gene expression. A career in molecular biology requires a strong background in biology as well as in chemistry, mathematics and physics. The Molecular Biology Major has been designed for three groups of students: (a) those who plan to enter a research career in molecular biology or related areas such as biochemistry, genetics, oncology, microbiology, cell biology or developmental biology; (b) pre-professional students who plan to enter either a research or clinical career in medicine or allied health fields; and (c) students who plan to teach secondary-school science. Students with other interests are also welcome, of course. To obtain information about the program or to declare a Molecular Biology Major, stop by the Molecular Biology Major office, located in 445 Henry Mall, Room 118. Advisors are assigned through the program office and are located in many related departments throughout campus. Molecular biology advisors are especially competent to provide counsel regarding the major and career opportunities in molecular biology.

These quotes are some of the responses made on the Survey of Doctoral Education and Career Preparation. The quotes are sorted by discipline. You can see the response from other disciplines . These quotes supplement an article of advice for selecting a doctoral program . Students responded to the question: "Knowing everything that you know now, what advice would you give others entering or in the early years of graduate school? " The quotes are sorted into six categories. Generally, there are a half dozen comments per category, the alternating colors are different student's comments. These categories were applied by us, as we read through the thousands of comments. They are the most common categories of advice pertaining to the selection of a doctoral program. The frequency with which various kinds of advice emerged varies by discipline. You can see the relative distribution here.

    Molecular Biology
First published Sat Feb 19, 2005; substantive revision Wed Sep 9, 2009 The field of molecular biology studies macromolecules and the macromolecular mechanisms found in living things, such as the molecular nature of the gene and its mechanisms of gene replication, mutation, and expression. Given the fundamental importance of these macromolecular mechanisms throughout the history of molecular biology, it will be argued that a philosophical focus on the concept of a mechanism generates the clearest picture of molecular biology's history, concepts, and case studies utilized by philosophers of science. This encyclopedia entry is organized around these three themes. First, a historical overview of the developments in molecular biology from its origins to the present pays special attention to the features of this history referenced by philosophers. Philosophical analysis then turns to the key concepts in the field: mechanism, information, and the gene. Finally, philosophers have used molecular biology as a case study to address more general issues in the philosophy of science, such as theory reduction and scientific explanation, each of which are understood most clearly in molecular biology with a focus on the field's attention to mechanisms.
