Mongolian physical geography : landscapes, deserts, mountains ...
Mongolia is landlocked in the heart of Eurasia, the greatest terrestrial mass of the globe. It is the 6th largest country in Asia and the 18th largest in the world occupying a territory of approximately 1.6 million square kilometers, about the same surface area as France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Spain and Portugal combined together. The territory of Mongolia, primarily in the west and southwest, is covered with the following three major mountain ranges accompanied by high plateaus. - The chain of Altaï in the west, the location of the country’s highest extremity (4,374 m), which extends in arc reaching Gobi and forms the region of Gobi Altaï - The Khangaï Range in the central part (peak: 3,905 m), which is the principal water tower of the country and the source of Selenge River, Mongolia’s largest river, flowing into Lake Baïkal, a gigantic inland sea, which extends in Russia’s Siberia to the north of the country; - The Khentii Mounts, the native soils of Chingis Khan, with abundant forests and peaks rising up to

    Ancient Mongolia
Mongolia was like other countries when they first appeared, they were fighting over lands that they had, grazing areas, and the people living there were nomadic, lived off the land, and was without a central government. They were around in the stone ages but were not that important until the invention of iron weapons. Stone Age lasted from the 8th century BCE to 4th century BCE. Some believe that they were there 700 thousand years ago. Ancient Mongolian economy back then was about herding animals to different grazing grounds, hunting animals, trading with other people, raided agricultural people and each other. The Mongolians measured their wealth with the amount of livestock in their possession. They had meat from sheep and milk from their horses. They had traded for things they needed, which wasn’t much. Mongolians started to ride horses in 1000 B.C. They had trust in their horses to let them wander around without being tied down. They are przevalsky horses and have been around since man first walked the earth. They had both tools and weapons of their own. Some tools were rocks, daggers, swords, arrows, and helmets. Nomads lived together on the steppes or Mongolia. They sometimes came together under a leader to pose a threat to other people

The Gobi desert dominates the southern third of the country. Most of this desert is rolling plains, with just enough sparse grasses to support occasional herds of sheep, goats and camels. The Altai Nuruu mountains in the west are the only permanently snow-covered mountains in the country. To the east of this range is the Great Lakes region (a depression with over 300 lakes), and beyond this is the Hangayn-Hentiyn mountain complex, where the country’s largest river, the Selenge Gol, originates. This river eventually drains into Lake Baikal in Siberia. The Hangayn-Hentiyn mountains surround a fertile basin in the south-eastern corner of which lies the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. Central and northern Mongolia is in the Siberian steppe, a semi-arid grassland which supports an estimated 30 million horses, cattle, sheep, goats and camels. The area also has significant mineral deposits. The few forests (less than 10% of Mongolia’s land area) are in the north. MONGOLIA GEOGRAPHY PAGE General Information Map Geography Climate ...
