Precalculus: A Prelude to Calculus
Sheldon Axler
This textbook focuses on topics needed for success in calculus. The book treats key concepts leisurely and in depth, even though the book is about half the size of the typical thousand-page tome that includes many unnecessary topics. Written by a recipient of a Mathematical Association of America award in expository writing, this book is designed to be read by students. It contains the student solutions manual with complete worked-out solutions to all odd-numbered exercises, written by the author to ensure consistency and the same high-quality standards as the rest of the text. As with the author's widely-adopted linear algebra textbook, this book features clear explanations of the main ideas. For example, area is presented from a perspective that will prepare students for integral calculus, and the book gives an unusually well-motivated introduction to e . Inverse functions are used as a unifying concept to define roots, logarithms, and the inverse trigonometric functions. This book is available with the WileyPLUS online learning system, which provides online homework grading that gives students instant feedback while keeping records for instructors.

at least 170 of 200, you are on track for at least an A- at least 145, you are on track for at least a B- at least 125, you are on track for at least a C- at least 105, you are on track for at least a D- 104 or below, you are on track for an F. If you are not satisfied with your likely grade, you must change something . Change how much you work, or at least how you work.

The truth is that they throw a LOT of math into classes called "Precalculus" that is NOT needed for Calculus. So, this is just the Precalculus you'll really need for Calculus 1... and I'll show it to you exactly how you're going to be using it which is sometimes different than how it's done in Precalculus. So, if you need a review of Precalculus for your Precalc final, this will have a lot (but, not all) of what you need. If you're about to start Calculus, then this is exactly what you need! Throughout the lessons (even the easy stuff), I've got previews to Calculus worked in. So, it's best to start with the first lesson and work straight through! Precalculus Teachers: I recommend that you cover this material during the last part of your course as a partial review for the final.

Factoring Polynomials top of page You can use the distributive law to see that 3(4n + 5) = 12n + 15, and you can use FOIL to see that (n - 3)(n - 5) = n^2 - 8n + 15. But how can you start with the answer and find the factors? It's like Jeopardy: I say, "n^2 - 8n + 15," and you respond (in the form of a question), "What is (n - 3)(n - 5), Alex, uh, I mean Dan?.
Here's a way to look at the first problem:
This is called "factoring out a common factor."
      What about n^2
This can be done (factored) by finding two numbers
whose sum is 8 and product is 15: use 3 and 5. So we get:
      n^2
      = n^2 + 15 . . . . now factor common factors in pairs:
      = n (n (n . . . watch the signs!
      = (n - 5) (n . . . the (n - 3) was the common factor!
