Teaching About Native American Issues
Many U.S. teachers discuss Native American history and culture, especially at Thanksgiving time. Unfortunately, the portrayal of Native Americans is often stereotypical, inaccurate, or outdated. This page offers several tips on how to teach more effectively about Native Americans. A Checklist of Dos and Don'ts The following checklist is based in part on recommendations from the Council on Interracial Books for Children: Do not equate Indians with "things." For example, if alphabet cards say, "A is for apple, B is for ball, .... I is for Indian," pick a different word so that Indian people are not presented as objects.
Do not speak of Native Americans exclusively in past tense. There are nearly one million Native people in the U.S. today, yet many books and videos still have titles such as How the Indians Lived
Do not perpetuate the myth that a few Europeans defeated thousands of Indians in battle. Historians say the number killed in battle was relatively small; what really defeated Native Americans were European diseases from which they had no immunity.
Do not let children to imitate Indians with stereotypes such as one-word sentences ("Ugh," "How"), Hollywood-style grammar ("Me heep big hungry"), or gestures (e.g., war whoops and tomahawk chops).

SUMMARY Recognizing American Indians/Native Americans as a heterogenous group that is nonetheless often united, Rosier (history, Villanova U.) provides historical, legal, political, and socioeconomic context on issues still facing First Nation peoples: stereotyping through popular culture images, the ongoing fight to repatriate ancestral remains and gain promised treaty rights, and controversial efforts to build reservation economies to ameliorate poverty. The book includes discussion questions and some photos. Setting the Record Straight
(Infrequently Asked Questions)
There is a lot of very good information about native peoples of America and their languages out there on the Internet. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of garbage. Some of it poses as scholarship.
We have strived to include links to as much useful information as possible on our website. However, we are trying to present a correct resource here. Though we have linked to websites which take different positions on legitimate disagreements of theory or history (Was Michigamean a Siouan language? Did Pocahontas really save John Smith's life?), we have not linked to anything we know is substantially incorrect, nor to claims which are unsupported by any fact.
Instead, we would like to correct some of the myths, mistakes, and just plain made-up stories of the Internet on this page.

Native Americans
As a Member of the Natural Resource Committee that has jurisdiction regarding Native American issues, I am given the responsibility to protect the Native American community. As a member of the Native American Caucus, I have additional resources to make me fully aware of the important issues facing the Native American community. In Congress, I vote on and sponsor legislation that will help, encourage and support the Native American community. As a friend, I have dedicated much of my life to serve as an advocate for Native Americans, and will continue to champion for what is best for the community. As Chairman of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Nutrition, I played an important role in authoring the Nutrition Title of the 2008 Farm Bill. This critical legislation included the largest expansion of on-reservation nutrition programs in the history of the USDA. I also worked with my colleagues to ensure this Farm Bill was the first ever to fully meet the needs of minority and socially disadvantaged farmers. Funding for outreach and service assistance to tribal and other minority farmers was significantly increased. In addition, the Farm Bill created long overdue transparency and accountability at the USDA in its services to minority farmers and ranchers. Last Congress, in my role as CHC Chair I fought to include the contributions of

About this image
A Line in the Sand
C ultural property includes not only land and other tangible property, but ideas, traditions, and other non-tangibles. Cultural property belongs to the cultural group, rather than to an individual. As an individual has the right to control use of his/her property, the cultural group has the right to control the use of its property. Not all people recognize cultural property. As a result some individuals will use another group's cultural properties without permission; often that use is offensive to the cultural group, because their property is used in a way that distorts or is disrespectful to the group's beliefs.
