Many Native American myths could equally be called folktales: they seem to be about ordinary people, not gods. However, the Native American attitude is that everything is animated by divinity. Hence ordinary people, animals and places are divine. Often the people are not even named, or are given a convenient tag, such as Rabbit Boy – raised by rabbits. Nor is there much attempt to characterize them. Universal principles are held to be more important than individual traits.Whereas Greek myths were shaped and ordered by classical authors, few Native American myths were written down before the late 19th century. Thus the apparent inconsistencies of the right-brain oral tradition are still very much present. Native American spirituality: Among all tribes there is a strong sense that behind all individual spirits and personifications of the divine, there is a single creative life-force, sometimes called ‘the Great Mystery’, which expresses itself throughout the universe, in every human, animal, tree and grain of sand. Every story, too, is a working out of this life-force.

May 25, 2010 "Contribute content like this. Start Here As a student of Native American mythology, I enjoy understanding that which shaped Native American beliefs. While this varies somewhat from tribe to tribe and even from clan to clan, there are certain similarities within each.
A basic belief of nearly every tribe was that man and nature needed to function as one. To separate the two and allow one dominance over the other was considered a sure-fire path to destruction.
Native America as a whole were very spiritual. It believed that everything was connected within the great circle of life. Many of its people held fast to the concept that there was a time when man and animals spoke the same language and could communicate with one another.
It was not until man sought to hold himself above his animal brothers that these two types cultures and their corresponding languages split apart. Even then, Native Americans believed in the basic pattern of life. They ebbed and flowed with the seasons, often moving to one area of the land for winter and another for summer.
They planted by the cycles of nature to make certain that crops could be harvested in some form all year around. They also followed the patterns of the game they used to clothe and feed their families.

      Introduction
Once upon a time there were Red Indians. Then along came the Palefaces... But before the White Man came trampling all over the land, the many native tribes of what was still to become America had all the space in their world. They made good use of it, living close to nature in what might seem like a glorious camping holiday if there wasn't the constant threat of starvation and war. There was much in the way of free-range food, but hunting wasn't as easy as getting up in the morning, taking a stroll and shooting a few passing bison with your bow. Even Plains societies who lived off the prolific buffalo fell under the threat of starvation at times. When herds were found, the people were grateful and thanked the Gods profusely. The Native Americans had - and still have! - a huge respect for nature. Animals had powerful spirits and it was necessary to thank them and placate them if you wanted to make a meal of them. When corn came by courtesy of the deities, it was also given its due measure of respect. Living so close to nature, you could see into the souls of the BEAVER, BADGER and Buffaloes as they went about their business. You could feel the THUNDER-BIRD fixing the weather, and revel in the rascality of RAVEN, MANABOZHO and COYOTE with their tantalising tricks.

INUIT MYTHOLOGY Storytellers told two kinds of stories: ancient and recent. Ancient stories told about encounters with animals in human form, and about witches and sea goddesses. Recent tales included the adventures of hunters on land and seastories about courage, strength, vanity, and conceit.
KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS IN MYTHOLOGY During the Dark Ages, Britain was without a king and the country was divided. Death and destruction reigned over the land as power-hungry overlords armed themselves and fought against their fellow countrymen. Out of those dark and violent centuries, a legendary leader arose; King Arthur became one of the most famous figures in British literature.
ROMAN MYTHOLOGY Roman and Greek mythology share many of the same gods and goddesses. However, Roman myths have evolved more from real, historical figures and events than did tales from Greek mythology.
