Becky Robinette Wright/Chesterfield Observer Today, visitors to Henricus Historical Park may still smell the aroma of food roasted over an open fire, learn how to scrape deerskin and view craft-making by the descendents of the early indigenous people. The park teaches visitors about the history of the colonists and Native Americans. Tamyse Jefferson of the Chickahominy Tribe has been contributing to the Native American component of Henricus for around a decade. ANTH 256
Native Americans, Past and Present
The subject is the indigenous peoples living in North America, from the Rio Grande to the Inuit ("Eskimo") communities bordering the Arctic Ocean. The essential questions around which this course are organized are these:
  • When and from where did the Native Americans come? What were tribal groups like before the contact with Europeans began, and how different were they from region to region? What was the nature of the "encounter," with all its trauma and drama, when native societies came into contact with colonists from (mainly) Europe? What are Native Americans like today? (and here the story is quite surprising) What are the principal current conflicts in which Indians are now involved? What lies ahead for Native Americans in the next century? Oblivion or strength?
  • We will find that Native Americans teach us much about (1) the many different ways humans can organize their cultural lives, (2) their histories and the epic collision they endured with invading peoples, (3) the strong resurgence of political assertiveness and quite astonishing gains achieved in recent years, and (4) the future prospects of this continent's indigenous peoples and their cultural ways.

Keepers of the Children: Native American Wisdom and Parenting
    by Laura Ramirez
(Reno NV) Parenting Book: Keepers of the Children Keepers of the Children uses native spiritual ideas (like good medicine and stewardship) to teach parents how to raise children to lead uniquely purposeful and productive lives.
By reading the book, you will learn:
    • How to guide the unfolding of your child's unique strengths and talents
    • Help your child find the courage to be himself
    • Overcome negative aspects from your upbringing
    • The difference between discipline and punishment (and why native people did not believe in punishment)
    • The true meaning of child stewardship
    • To guide your child to make the right decisions when you're not around and even in the face of peer pressure
    • How to create and live from a deeply satisfying family code
    • Why it's dangerous to raise children to be nice and what you should do instead
    • How parenting is part of your personal growth
    • All about child development and why it is essential for you to understand
By raising your children in this way, you will help grow up a generation of innovators (rather than imitators) who have the courage to develop their unique strengths and talents and use them to act in service of the world. An added benefit is that your children will cherish and respect you for showing them how to create fulfilling lives.
