THE HISTORY OF NEVADA By Steve Fey If you look through my archives you’ll see that once or twice or thrice or quartice or maybe a few times I wrote some things about the history of Colorado, where I used to live. Well, now I live in an even drier and odder place, called Nevada. That is, it’s called Nev da, according to the official State Map. And would the official State Map people lie to you? Of course not! Since I’ve been in Nev da I’ve had occasion to teach the history of the place. Yep, someone who grew up away back east in Ah-hi-ah got to teach people the history of the sere and arid State where Mark Twain started calling himself that, and where you’ve always been able to lose your shirt in an afternoon. The most important thing about this place is that, historically speaking, nobody ever really wanted it. There were some people like the Shoshone and Paiute who wandered around the place, but it took about a thousand square miles to maintain a family of two, so the population never got very dense. The Spanish passed through a few times, and even named the valley wherein I live. It isn’t a valley, by the way. Nothing is what it’s called here. But the Spanish never stayed. They’d just pack up their horses and move on to California. Unless they were headed to Utah. Then they’d pack up their horses and move on to Utah. You get the idea. There were some fur trapping expeditions that passed through, but they didn’t want the place either. Even, and this is amazing, the Mormons sent by Brigham Young only stayed a few years. They went back to Salt Lake City, still arguing over whether they were supposed to have been converting Indians or digging for gold. For a while this place was a part of Mexico, but other than the big hotels I doubt that anyone in Mexico wants to own this desert.

    History of Nevada
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Nevada portal Nevada became the 36th state on October 31, 1864, after telegraphing the Constitution of Nevada to the Congress days before the November 8 presidential election (the largest and costliest transmission ever by telegraph). Statehood was rushed to help ensure three electoral votes for Abraham Lincoln 's reelection and add to the Republican congressional majorities. Nevada's harsh but rich environment shaped its history and culture. Before 1858 small Mormon settlements along the Utah border sustained their communities through faith, but the secular western section stumbled along until the great silver strikes beginning in 1858 created boom towns and fabulous fortunes. After the beginning of the 20th century, profits declined while Progressive reformers sought to curb rampaging capitalism and its attendant miseries. They imagined a civilized Nevada of universities, lofty idealism, and social reform. But an economic bust during the 1910s and disillusionment from failures at social reform and a population decline of nearly one-fourth meant that by 1920 Nevada had degenerated into a "beautiful desert of buried hopes." The boom returned when big time gambling arrived in 1931, and with good transportation (especially to California metropolitan areas), the nation's easiest divorce laws, and a speculative get-rich-quick spirit, Nevada had a boom-and-bust economy that was mostly boom until the worldwide financial crisis of 2008 revealed extravagant speculation in housing and casinos on an epic scale

    Nevada - History
The first inhabitants of what is now Nevada arrived about 12,000 years ago. They were fishermen, as well as hunters and food gatherers, for the glacial lakes of the ancient Great Basin were then only beginning to recede. Numerous sites of early human habitation have been found, the most famous being Pueblo Grande de Nevada (also known as Lost City). In modern times, four principal Indian groups have inhabited Nevada: Southern Paiute, Northern Paiute, Shoshoni, and Washo. year. (The southeastern tip of Nevada was assigned to the Territory of New Mexico.) Soon other Mormon settlements were started there and in Las Vegas Valley. The Las Vegas mission failed, but the farming communities to the northwest succeeded, even though friction between Mormons and placer miners in that area caused political unrest. Most of the Mormons in western Nevada departed in 1857, when Salt Lake City was threatened by an invasion of federal troops. A separate Nevada Territory was established in 1861; only three years later, on 31 October 1864, Nevada achieved statehood, although the present boundaries were not established until 18 January 1867. Two factors accelerated the creation of Nevada: the secession of the southern states, whose congressmen had been blocking the creation of new free states, and the discovery, in 1859, of the Comstock Lode, an immense concentration of silver and gold which attracted thousands of fortune seekers and established the region as a thriving mining center.
