    Virginia City, Nevada.
An award winning exhibit from the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is now available online. Havens in a Heartless World: Virginia City's Saloons and the Archaeology of the Wild West is a cooperative venture between the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office and Nevada Humanities' Online Nevada Encyclopedia . The online exhibit features the best of more than 300,000 artifacts recovered since 1993 during excavations of four saloons in the Comstock Historic District. The sites explored include an Irish saloon, a combination saloon and shooting gallery (I wonder how that worked), John Piper's Old Corner Bar (associated with Piper's Opera House, which is still in use), and the Boston Saloon, an African-American establishment operated by William A.G. Brown between 1864 and 1875. The online exhibit is in three parts: For more information about the exhibit, call Ron James at (775) 684-3440 or Karen Wikander at (775) 784-6527.

    The Lure of Minerals
When in 1850 the federal government set up the Utah Territory, almost all of Nevada was included except the southern tip, which was then part of New Mexico. Non-Mormons had been averse to settling in Mormon-dominated territory, but after gold was found in 1859 non-Mormons did come into the area. A rush from California began and multiplied manyfold as news of the Comstock Lode silver strike spread. Most of the newcomers preferred to consider themselves as still being within California, and a political question was added to the general upheaval. Meanwhile, miners came helter-skelter, raising camps that grew overnight into such booming and raucous places as Virginia City. Partly to impose order on the lawless, wide-open mining towns, Congress made Nevada into a territory in 1861 as migrant prospectors and settlers poured in. The territory was then enlarged by increasing its eastern boundary by one degree of longitude in 1862. It was rushed into statehood in 1864, with Carson City as its capital. President Lincoln (in order to get more votes to pass the Thirteenth Amendment) had signed the proclamation even though the territory did not actually meet the population requirement for statehood.

1825- As part of his Snake River expedition, Peter Skene Ogden became the first white man in Nevada.
He traveled through the Virgin Valley, a route that would serve as the right-of-way for the Old Spanish Trail (1829-1848) and for the Mormon road or southern route of travel to southern California.
The area was settled by pioneers of the Latter-Day Saints Church, who colonized Bunkerville in 1877 and Mesquite in 1880.

    About Nevada
Nevada History From the Utah Territory, the Nevada Territory (Nevada is Spanish for snow-capped or snowfall) was created by an Act of Congress. It was signed by President James Buchanan and became effective March 2, 1861. President Abraham Lincoln appointed James W. Nye of New York as Nevada's first Territorial Governor. Nevada became the 36 th State on October 31, 1864, when President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union. During the next 75 or so years, many mining towns flourished over the state.
Since the early 1930's, tourism, particularly entertainment, legalized gaming (since 1931), and mining are important to Nevada's economy.
Nevada is the seventh largest State with 109,895 Square Miles. The highest point, less than a mile from the California border in Esmeralda County, in the Inyo National Forest is Boundary Peak at 13,143 feet. Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states is 14,495 feet. Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park (not to be confused with Wheeler Peak in New Mexico) is the second highest peak in Nevada at 13,063 feet. It is in the Great Basin National Park, near the Utah border. Its east face forms a rock cirque (pronounced surk, that is a steep-walled semicircular basin) which holds a small glacier. Nevada's Wheeler Peak dominates the surrounding terrain, unlike Boundary Peak which has many mountains around it. The Lowest Point is the Colorado River at 470 feet.

Town springs up from '49er trading post
What started out as a lean-to and a few supplies in 1850, grew into the Town of Genoa by 1851. The "Dump Wagon" above (circa 1870s), helped clear the road to Stateline, Nevada.
    Genoa's place in Nevada history
Douglas County and Carson Valley history is very young, an important chapter in the romantic "Old West". Explorers and trappers made their way through this area but it wasn't until June of 1851 when John Reese and his party built a trading post that the area began to attract settlers and became a permanent settlement. Reese and his men took up land claims extending from the Walley's Hot Springs marsh area south of Genoa into Jack's Valley on the north. Since most of the men in Reese's party were Mormon, the location became known as Mormon Station. After building a trading post, Reese built a house and sent for his family in New York. Later, Reese added a blacksmith shop and a large corral for livestock. The Overland Emigrant Trail passed down what is now Genoa's Main Street. Reese's operation did very well and when the Mormons were called back to Salt Lake City in 1857, Reese decided to stay to protect his business and extensive land claims. A great deal of buying, trading and selling of land went on during these early years. Reese did return to Salt Lake City in 1859 after business reversals.
