New Age Religion and Western Culture: Esotericism in the Mirror of Secular Thought by Wouter J. Hanegraaff , State University of New York Press, SUNY Series in Western Esoteric Traditions (February 1998), 580 pages
Writing as an unbiased academic, neither gullible nor critical, Hanegraaff provides a superb overview of the New Age movement and the various aspects and beliefs that make up its worldview. He also refers to, quotes, and even has short biographical sections on, all the leading New Age lights, David Spangler, Shirley MacLaine, David Bohm, Edgar Cayce, Ramala, Marilyn Ferguson, Matthew Fox, Starhowk, and many more. The first part covers the main trends (as Hanegraaff sees it) in New Age religion ( channeling , healing, New Age Science, etc), and includes brief but very useful biographical sketches. The second looks at various themes, the Nature of Reality, the influence of mind in shaping our reality, new age cosmogony (Atlantis etc), and so on, The third part of the book gives the historical background of the New Age in teh western esoteric tradition. It is quite an experience to find long quotations by writers like Shirley MacLaine in such a serious and scholarly manner, not to criticise or ridicule but to elucidate the nature of New Age beliefs. This to me says much about the high academic integrity of the author.

What is New age Religion?
New Age Religion is not a religion at all, but a vast syncretism (or mixing) of numerous religious and philosophical ideas. This has been going on since the time of Alexander the Great , but was snuffed out under Christianity and its enforced dogma starting around 325 AD. Alexander's vast empire opened the door for Eastern religion and mysticism to move West, while Greek philosophy and reason moved East. Today the same process continues, but on a global scale in particular with the internet. It has some similarities to ancient Gnosticism adopting both its methods and its individual nature. Most often rejecting reason and science, New Age religion more than anything is emotional, filing in a void left by a secular culture and discontent with traditional religious beliefs. Modern environmentalism could be broadly classified into New Age religion because of its treatment as a pseudo-religion and deification of Nature. This is part of the continuing process of syncretism Introduction The New Age Movement is in a class by itself. Unlike most formal religions, it has no holy text, central organization, membership, formal clergy, geographic center, dogma, creed, etc. They often use mutually exclusive definitions for some of their terms. The New Age is in fact a free-flowing spiritual movement; a network of believers and practitioners who share somewhat similar beliefs and practices. Their book publishers take the place of a central organization; seminars, conventions, books and informal groups replace of sermons and religious services. Quoting John Naisbitt (1):

Introduction:
The New Age Movement is in a class by itself. Unlike most formal religions, it has no holy text, central organization, membership, formal clergy, geographic center, dogma, creed, etc. They often use mutually exclusive definitions for some of their terms. The New Age is in fact a free-flowing spiritual movement; a network of believers and practitioners who share somewhat similar beliefs and practices, which they add on to whichever formal religion that they follow. Their book publishers take the place of a central organization; seminars, conventions, books and informal groups replace of sermons and religious services. Quoting John Naisbitt: "In turbulent times, in times of great change, people head for the two extremes: fundamentalism and personal, spiritual experience...With no membership lists or even a coherent philosophy or dogma, it is difficult to define or measure the unorganized New Age movement. But in every major U.S. and European city, thousands who seek insight and personal growth cluster around a metaphysical bookstore, a spiritual teacher, or an education center."

11. Medieval Miracles
A short essay on medieval attitudes towards miracles, with links.
http://www.gloriana.nu/miracles.html
The miraculous touch
For our medieval friends, the Christian faith was as natural as the sunrise. Miracles were a common topic for the legends, sermons, art and literature of the period, and were most prized for their illustration of divine power and their effect in leading the unbelievers to knowledge of the true God. Many of the medieval tales of miracles seem quite farfetched to the modern eye, and even the most devout Christians today are inclined to dismiss them as the fruit of pious myth. Having perused many of these legends, I am inclined to think that notion too drastic. It is true that many probably were not intended to be taken literally, and that others are sheer fabrication. But I also believe that many of them may have really occurred (albeit not exactly as depicted in popular legend!). Divine power is boundless, and, in an age when man was open to rather dramatic manifestations of this power, and therefore would have benefited from such occurrences, it well may be that miracles were far more common than today. (Particularly since I am one who believes the divine sense of humour is not to be minimized!) In recent centuries (and I say this largely with regret), religion is often centred on fellowship and a concept of morality that is based on what are perceived as the needs of society. The intellectual may admit to belief in a creator or "higher power", but seldom will admit to a faith in the "anthropomorphic image of God" that hasn't been in vogue since the age of reason. It was quite different in the Middle Ages. Much as popular devotion centred largely on aspects of the divine with which the common man could commonly identify (as is clear from the very popular tales of the

What is 'New Age' Religion, and Why Can't Christians Get on Board?

If you haven't run into it before, it would be hard to avoid it now. Oprah's rolling out the red carpet for the New Age: a weekly online class with New York Times bestselling guru Eckhart Tolle and a daily broadcast with Marianne Williamson, whose Course in Miracles was beckoning seekers thirty years ago when I was tripping through the wonderland of discovering my own divinity and wielding the powers of the universe to create my own reality. As someone plucked out miraculously from the New Age , I can only hope that Christians who love and trust Oprah will not blur the lines of their faith. Oprah has stated that though she was raised as a Baptist, she no longer believes that Jesus is the only way to reach God. It sounds so much more rational and compassionate, doesn't it? Why can't we all just get along?

New Age: The Doctrine of Evolutionary Godhood
Generally, New Age thought supports the theory of organic evolution , but extends the concept to the evolution of the spirit. This is the concept of "Evolutionary Godhood," where the next step in evolution won't be physical, but spiritual. The principles of evolution are constantly moving mankind toward god-consciousness, where man and reality connect in unified enlightenment. The "fittest" already understand this reality, while the "unfit" (such as Christians and other proponents of dogmatic worldviews) act as a hindrance to evolutionary forces. Many New Age practices are designed to accelerate the evolutionary push into the spiritual realms. These practices include: (i) astral projection, which is training your soul to leave your body and travel around; (ii) channeling spirits, so they may speak through you or guide you; (iii) crystal usage, which purifies the energy systems of your body and mind; and (iv) visualization techniques, which include everything from basic mental imagery to role playing of animals or divine creatures. In a nutshell, Evolutionary Godhood means that mankind will soon see itself as god. This is often referred to as the "Christ principle" or "Christ consciousness." New Age teaches that we are basically good and inherently divine, and ultimately, we can create our own reality. New Age: The Doctrine of Global Unity
The second major doctrine of the New Age movement is "Global Unity." This concept typically consists of three parts:

Since 1975, many popular "mystical physics" books have claimed that the New Physics (especially Quantum Physics, also called Quantum Mechanics) lends scientific support to a pantheistic worldview of New Age beliefs about "creating your own reality." But these claims are based on speculations that are rejected by most scientists.

Virtual Pilgrimage
A pilgrim camp at Jericho Nota bene, May 2004: this site is currently undergoing a major makeover, mainly to get the code more standards-compliant. As a result, stuff is going to be broken at random places and times. All will be well again by end of summer. Still, you'll probably have a better experience if you just wait until fall. Welcome to a virtual pilgrimage to the Holy Land. These pages are intended to give some sense of the places visited by medieval Christian pilgrims from western Europe around the time of the Crusades, as well as to explain some of the historical background of the pilgrimage and the experiences along the way. They are intended primarily for the students in my Crusades course, as supplemental reading, but they are also offered to the general public in the hope of providing insight and understanding. For the pilgrimage, I have found a few companions to accompany us. Some are real, while others are completely fictional. I do this mainly to make the reading a little less dry. If you would like to investigate the history in more detail, there is a bibliography on my Inquiry page (link below). That's also where you can find credits for the many pictures I've used. This site has many pages in it, and nearly every page has one or more pictures. Going through the entire pilgrimage, between download time and reading time, will take some hours. This is intentional. These pages really are intended for browsing and are not designed for providing quick answers. If you are working on a paper or report, I recommend that you read a couple of the books cited in my Inquiry pageyou will find your answers much more quickly there.
