New Age Religion
by Dr. Phil Stringer (Florida)
"As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:9)
Every culture is either created by a set of religious beliefs or spawns a set of religious beliefs. For the last 30 years eastern mystic religions have increased in popularity in the United States. Some have taken an American flavor, using Christian terminology with new eastern mystic definitions. Others maintain their oriental trappings. They are often referred to as the "New Age movement." The New Age movement is fast becoming the religion of the "new American culture." EASTERN MYSTIC RELIGIONS Many Americans are curious about the number of eastern religions becoming popular and gaining followers in the United States. Zen Buddhism, Transcendental Meditation, Bahai, Hare Krishna, Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, the Divine Light Mission and a multitude of smaller movements are attracting thousands of young Americans. These eastern mystical religions are confusing and challenging to many Americans because of their entirely different epistemology (theory of knowledge or understanding). Classical western society is built upon the use of facts, objective truth, and reason. Ideas require rational explanations. To the eastern mystic, knowledge is entirely subjective they cannot expect to put truth into words or expect another to understand their religious experiences. Personal inspirations and inner feelings are the basis for everything, and all truth is individual and relative.

The selective collection of incipits from the Hours of the Virgin is slowly increasing, and more details will be added, each time there has been an opportunity to verify new principal sources. It is not possible to establish a search function, but you are welcome to email any query to me (but I can't promise a satisfactory outcome if you only furnish the incipits from Prime and None, as in the old invalid Madan Tests ). A new updated version is under preparation, see the CHD Tests . Not a real key, but only a guide to the final verification via this collection of incipits. A unique combination at Prime and None is only unique until another has been found. As long as the Madan principle is followed will you not discover any new uses.
Before you spend too much time on the identification of a new source is it a good idea to check if the first antiphon at Vespers has the incipit "Dum esset". In that case is it Horae ad usum Romanum , and you can save yourself any further efforts.

New Age Religion Charles J. Aebi Dear Aebi: "What is New Age Religion?" At most book stores there is a shelf or rack full of books on one phase or another of "New Age Religion," which is a mixture of Hinduism, environmentalism, Gnosticism, and the occult. Neil Anderson, editor of Gospel Advocate , says, "The New Age Movement cloaks the occult in the description of New Age enlightenment: 'You don't need God; you are God. You don't need to repent of your sins and depend on God to save you. Sin isn't a problem; you just need to turn off your mind and tune in to the great cosmic oneness through harmonic convergence.' The New Age pitch is the oldest lie of Satan: 'You will be like God' (Genesis 3:5)." Hinduism is idolatry; Hindus worship many gods, including their ancestors, who are thought to be reincarnated as cows and various other animals. The goal of the individual Hindu is to get off the wheel of reincarnation to get out of the monotonous cycle of birth to death to rebirth to redeath to rebirth to redeath and be absorbed into the world-soul and thus become non-existent. This is accomplished through yoga, transcendental meditation, self-denial, and good works over the centuries to accumulate enough good karma. If some of these terms are familiar to you, it may be because they are used by modern sophisticated types, including some Hollywood people and Washington politicians who buy into New Age ideas. Several years ago Congress appropriated large sums of money to promote transcendental meditation in public schools and in the workplace; they believed it would improve one's health.

Oprah's New Age Jesus XM Religion Course
James Foster sent me this article written by a man named Warren Smith (not to be confused with my friend Dr. Warren Smith who teaches Patristics at Duke Divinity School), who was a previous devotee of Williamson's 'Course in Miracles' sponsored and supported by Oprah. This summary is quite revealing, and what it reveals is a pantheistic religion offering self-salvation by following this course and repudiating what the Bible teaches. Note I have simply copied the following article, and I do not know why there are lines through some of the main unBiblical tenets listed towards the end of the article. This is the initail draft of the website and needs work; but, I was late enough as it was. As such, here is the page. There will be changes, so I hope that you book mark this page and visit often. Each of the following links will take you to the components of the essays and any related graphics. An Introduction to Books of Hours
Cowled canine, possibly mocking the itinerant preachers of the day.
Library Company of Philadelphia, MS 5, f. 39v The Book of Hours—the main prayer book used in medieval Europe—was divided into eight sections (or "hours") that were meant to be read at specific times of day. Each section contained prayers, psalms, hymns, and other readings intended to help the reader secure salvation for himself and his departed loved ones. The contents of Books of Hours varied according to the owner's needs, interests, taste, and economic status, but some elements were common. The heart of every Book of Hours was a set of prayers called the Hours of the Virgin, which sought the Virgin's assistance and intercession. Other components included a calendar, Gospel lessons, and penitential psalms. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, every member of the middle and upper classes would have wanted to own an illuminated Book of Hours. These treasured books were given as gifts on special occasions, such as weddings, and they often appeared in medieval wills, testifying to their value and importance. A Book of Hours was often the first and only book an individual owned in his or her lifetime. In the most luxurious books, made for the wealthiest patrons, each section was prefaced by a miniature and the texts were surrounded by borders. More inexpensive versions contained fewer miniatures and borders.
