Liberal premier toppled after botched NB Power sale
Shawn Graham becomes the first premier in the history of New Brunswick to be denied a second term in office. Fredericton (27 Sept. 2010) - The New Brunswick Liberal government of Premier Shawn Graham was swept from power after a single term on Monday as voters across the province vented their anger on key issues, primarily the botched sale of NB Power (ENBP) to Hydro Quebec (HQ). Conservative Leader David Alward will become the province's new premier while Graham leaves office as the first government leader in New Brunswick history to be denied a second term. He was elected in 2006. So pitched was the anger over NB Power that media outlets speculated on a pending Liberal disaster throughout the campaign and declared a Conservative victory almost the moment the polls were closed. Not a single vote had been reported before CTV News projected a Tory majority. The proposed sale of NB Power was the clear flashpoint that doomed the Liberals. Announced without warning by Graham last November, the deal touched a province-wide nerve, producing such a backlash that the premier was forced to back down within months.

Glynn County St. Simons Island Brunswick Jekyll Island ... Little St. Simons Island YOU ARE HERE: Project Oaktree
History of Brunswick, Georgia
Mark Carr, a captain in General James Oglethorpe's Marine Boat Company, was this area's first settler. He established his plantation as early as 1738 on 1,000 acres along the Turtle River, an area known as Plug Point. In 1771, the Royal Province of Georgia bought Carr's Fields and laid out the town of Brunswick in the grid style following Oglethorpe's plan for Savannah. In 1797, the General Assembly transferred the county seat from Frederica on St. Simons Island to the town Brunswick.
The town is named after King George II's ancestral home, the Hanoverian duchy of Braunsweig-Lunenburg, Germany. Following the Revolutionary War when many other towns and cities were distancing themselves from their English heritage, Brunswick retained the English names of its streets and squares - Newcastle, Hanover, Gloucester, London, for examples.

History of The Mill
Fulcard Van Nordstrand advertises for sale a gristmill with 2 pair of grist stones, a fulling mill and a press house standing on a constant stream with 2 dwelling houses on 112 acres of land, 3 miles from New Brunswick, on the northwest bank of the Lawrence Brook. This is the earliest written documentation of a mill in Milltown.
The mill is purchased by Ferdinand Schuurman. During this year, British troops raid the mill and capture 2 local militiamen, Ferdinand's nephew James Schuurman and his cousin John Thompson. They were temporarily held in New Brunswick and then transferred to the Sugar House Prison in upstate New York. They managed to escape and made their way to Morristown.
Ferdinand Schuurman dies and his mill is operated by his widow Eleanor and his son Abraham.
Abraham sells the mill to Tunis Quick of Hunterdon County.
Quick sells the mill to Nicholas Van Brundt. Van Brundt builds a new fulling mill.
Van Brundt sells the mill to John Bennett.

departments: administration city clerk law finance ... engineering History of New Brunswick In 1730, the City of New Brunswick was so named in honor of the English royal house of Brunswick and became a colonial center for trade and commerce. Rutgers University, founded in New Brunswick in 1766, was the eighth college to be founded in the colonies and the only state university to have existed before the Revolutionary War. New Brunswick figures prominently into the history of the American Revolution and early United States. With the turn of the century and the Industrial Revolution, the city again grew to become a center of industry and commerce, utilizing the Raritan River, the , and the rail lines. The city grew industrially and its preeminence as a pharmaceutical town dates to 1885 when the Johnson brothers moved their adhesive tape and gauze business to an old mill in New Brunswick. Johnson and Johnson is now the world's largest health care products manufacturer and retains its world headquarters in downtown New Brunswick.
The manufacturing industry needed a workforce and to meet this need, many new Americans settled in New Brunswick. Because of this, the city today has a diverse population which can trace its origins to countries in Europe, Africa, South American, Central America and Asia. As these immigrants and their families settled in the city, New Brunswick's spirit of community was born. This spirit is evidenced throughout the city in our churches, schools, theaters, restaurants, social clubs, and business. The rich heritage of the people helps to make New Brunswick a great place to live, work and visit.
