    Richibucto remembers 7 brothers
CBC News Seven men from Richibucto, N.B., will be among the veterans remembered on Wednesday as Remembrance Day services are planned throughout the province. The seven Vautour brothers all served in the Armed Forces during the Second World War. Four of them fought for Canada overseas, and only three of the brothers ever returned home. The band of seven brothers made headlines in 1941 for their commitment to service in the Canadian Forces. Their niece Loretta Jennings still has a copy of a 1941 newspaper with a photo of her seven uncles. The caption underneath says their service was a great example of patriotism. Jennings remembers the day she found out that her favourite uncle, Eloi, who was also the youngest of the seven, had been killed trying to help a wounded soldier. "I was devastated 'cause he was my favourite. When he came home on leave and I'd see him coming, I'd run and jump right in his arms," Jennings said.

      Welcome to the History Department
      What is History?
What is it to study History?
How does History relate to other disciplines?
The essence of history as a field of study is its comprehensiveness. While other disciplines of the modern university claim particular elements of human experience and human concerns, history boldly tries to embrace them all. On the one hand, it articulates the uniqueness of the individuals, cultures and events that constitute the human past and the human present. On the other, it explores the great commonalities of human experience and social existence. Most historians agree that historical understanding differs from other forms of knowledge mainly in its insistence that nothing human can be fully understood except in terms of its historical evolution.
      Where can History take me?
To the student, history offers a dazzling array of fields, approaches, challenges and opportunities. The study of history demands imagination, flexibility, a sense of realism, curiosity about people and their experience and an intense love of a good story. And its rewards are more than just intellectual. Historical study provides an excellent foundation for careers in secondary and advanced teaching; for archival and museum work; for the post-graduate study of law and administration; and for careers in politics, journalism, public service, policy development, business, the foreign service, or work abroad. Alone or combined with the study of other disciplines, history offers a liberal educational foundation for the subsequent pursuit of most careers and professions.

In the early 1990's New Brunswick was served by a comprehensive communications system, which included 12 commercial AM radio stations, 7 commercial FM radio stations, and 4 commercial television stations. The first radio station in the Atlantic provinces, CFNB, began broadcasting in Fredericton in 1923. In the early 1990's the province had four English-language daily newspapers and one French-language daily; their combined daily circulation was 148,100. New Brunswick's first newspaper, the Royal Saint John Gazette and Nova Scotia Intelligencer, began publication in 1783. Today the leading papers are the Daily Gleaner, of Fredericton; the Telegraph-Journal, of Saint John; the Times-Transcript, of Moncton; and L'Acadie Nouvelle, of Caraquet. Economy
Like much of Canada and especially like the other Atlantic provinces, New Brunswick has had, since its earliest settlement, an economy that is closely tied to its natural resources. Forestry products (including manufactured items) have been New Brunswick's economic mainstay throughout its history. Both fishing and agriculture have declined in significance. Since the discovery of extensive base metal ore deposits in the 1950's, mineral production has increased dramatically. With the growth of service industries and specialized manufacturing, the province has a wider employment base than ever before.

Welcome to Bathurst NB! Bathurst Menu Random Facts Paul Joseph James Martin also known as Paul Martin, Sr., noted lawyer, politician and father of former Prime Minister Paul Martin was raised in Bathurst. History of Bathurst, New Brunswick (NB) Early settlers from France came to the area in the 17th century in what became part of the colony of Acadia. Following the fall of this part of Acadia to British control in the Seven Years' War, the region saw numerous English and Scottish settlers, particularly during the latter 18th century through the 20th century. The community was named by the Governor, Sir Howard Douglas (1823-1831), in honor of Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst (1762-1834), Secretary of State for the Colonies of the British government.
The opening of the Intercolonial Railway of Canada in 1876 provided a fast connection from the port of Bathurst to the rest of North America which was essential for developing the region's principal industries in forestry and zinc mining.
In 1881, the Roman Catholic Church constructed the Sacré-Coeur Cathedral.

NEW BRUNSWICK
LOCAL HISTORY Saint John is the largest city in New Brunswick, Canada. Located at the mouth of the Saint John River,on the Bay of Fundy.
Saint John Harbour was first entered probably in 1524 by Gomez (A Spaniard) and named Rio De La Buelta. Earlier still Basque, Breton and Norman Fisherman are to believed to have made voyages to the Bay of Fundy in the early 1500s.
History records that the French explorers Sieur de Monts and Samuel De Champlain, arrived at the mouth of what is now the St. John River on June 24, 1604, feast day of St. John the Baptist and named the River in the Saint's honour.
Portland Point, near where H.M.C.S. Brunswicker is located, is an important historic landmark on the east side of Saint John Harbour. It was here that the first permanent french settlement in that part of Acadia now known as New Brunswick was made.
Fortified by Charles La Tour, who was made Lieutenant Governor in 1631 to 1635 and engaged in trade with the natives.
It was occupied in 1758 by the British and renamed Fort Frederick . The latter was destroyed by American revolutionaries in 1775 but was replaced by Fort Howe (1777-1778), whose block house has since been reconstructed. The settlement began to develope in 1783, when the United Empire Loyalists established Parr Town and

A Brief Description
New Brunswick History
The original inhabitants of New Brunswick were the First Nations - members of the Mi'kmaq, the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) and Passamaquoddy tribes, who lived in the eastern and coastal regions.
The first known European exploration was conducted in 1534 by the French explorer, Jacques Cartier, who discovered and named the Bay of Chaleur
In 1604, other French explorers, Pierre du Gua de Months and Samuel de Champlain established a camp at St. Croix Island. Over the next 150 years, other French settlements were founded in the present day New Brunswick. This entire area was claimed by France and named the colony of Acadia.
After numerous conflicts between the French and British , the Treaty of Utrecht, signed in 1713, ceded the Acadia area to Britain. The Acadians were forced into exile by the British. Many escaped to the northeastern part of present day New Brunswick. Following the Seven Years’ War (1756 – 63), most of present day New Brunswick was absorbed into the colony of

How it all began... Vehicles were first officially recorded in Fredericton (the capital) in 1905, but no plates were issued. Interestingly, this makes NB the third province, after Ontario and Quebec, to officially record motor vehicles. The province began registering vehicles in 1908 and, up until 1910, the plates were provided by the owner. These markers were often white on black, and made of leather, with the initials NB usually printed vertically after the serial number. A dated 1910 porcelain plate is known to exist but it too is provided by the owner as the province did not start officially supplying plates until 1911 when annual registration took effect. NB had a longer run of porcelain plates than any other province. They lasted until 1917 and were in a beautiful array of colours. They are rare, and highly prized today. Believe it or not, NB motorists were required to drive on the left side of the road until Dec 1, 1922! This posed a challenge for neighboring Maine which always had been driving on the right!
