New Caledonia is a multi-cultural society. The Melanesian population has a long and proud heritage and culture, and throughout the land you will see a strong Melanesian influence in architecture, art and crafts, and hospitality. This is uniqly combined with a French influence and ambience, described as a 'taste of France in the South Pacific'. In harmony with the Melanesian culture the French have brought in European style and elegance. There are also other smaller influences including Polynesian and Asian.

Rivers Beaches Raindrop Links ... Contact Sea Keepers Authors note: Seakeepers was a program for grade schools done in association with the Hypermedia Unit at the University of Auckland and Telecom New Zealand in 1996 - just after the invention of the World Wide Web (WWW). Seakeeper's objective was to introduce school children between the ages of 6 and 10 to people who had dedicated their lives to looking after the oceans and waterways of our world - people I nicknamed Sea Keepers. The program has currents of the New Zealand Maori underlying the direction and exercises for students. This quote explains why. "Underlying the Maori thinking about natural resources is the concept of Maori - the life principle that resides in all things. A river is a treasure and it has its own life force. Therefore extraction of water or the introduction of waste into rivers is not just a matter of physical degradation or ecological compromise. It can be seen as an offence in the cultural sense. The river has values stretching beyond the immediate needs of clamouring users." The project was my third major experiment in ways to improve our social awareness of the ecosystems that create and sustain us.

    CULTURE
New Caledonia's traditional staples are fish, coconut, banana, taro, sweet potato and yam. Lobster, coconut crab, dugong and turtle are also traditional food sources, as is roussette, the local flying fox. Unfortunately, much traditional fare is being superseded by canned and processed goods, although you will still come across the bougna, a delicious combination of taro, yam, sweet potato, banana, and pieces of chicken, crab or lobster wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in a ground oven.

Visit the Virtual New Caledonia Photo Library New Caledonia was named by the British explorer Captain James Cook, who spotted similarities with the Scottish highlands. Settled by both Britain and France during the first half of the 19th century, the island was made a French possession in 1853. While the French influence is strong, the Kanaks have retained much of their culture and tradition, particularly in rural areas and on the outer islands. For the French living in New Caledonia, sports tend to be closely related to the sea and include boating, fishing, windsurfing, and swimming or sunbathing at the city beaches of Anse Vata and the Baie de Citron; tennis and cycling are also popular. The French annexed New Caledonia, with the active support of French Catholic missionaries who had been there since 1843. From 1864 to 1897, the French transported over 30,000 convicts to the island. But as the European population burgeoned, tensions - often over the loss of land - rose between the newcomers and the indigenous Melanesians, (Kanaks). A Kanak revolt in 1878 claimed more than a thousand lives and heralded further repression by the territory's French rulers.
