New Hampshire is one of the New England states that lie in the northeastern United States. New Hampshire lies in the northernmost section of the diverse Appalachian region of the United States. It is an old, eroded area where glaciers formed or modified many of the physical features in recent geologic time. Advancing ice sheets smoothed hills and mountains and in places leveled the land. Receding, they dammed rivers, created lakes, and left widespread debris in such forms as moraines and drumlins. Land There are three major physical regions in New Hampshire: The Seaboard Lowland is a relatively narrow strip of land in the southeast. Sandy beaches and rocky promontories line the coast. Inland, the terrain consists of flat to rolling land dotted by occasional low hills. Seven miles (11 km) offshore are the barren Isles of Shoals, three of which are part of New Hampshire and the rest of Maine.

    Welcome to the Geography Department
The Department of Geography is a small, undergraduate-only department. We have five faculty members, plus a sixth professor whose main appointment is in the Department of Natural Resources. As a small department, we can provide our students a high degree of individual attention. Despite our size, we offer a wide range of courses that encompass the diversity of the discipline and provide students a solid foundation in geography. Geography is a multifaceted and inherently interdisciplinary field. At one level, geography is the study of spatial variation in human and environmental characteristics around the world. Geography is also the study of places. Geography is an integrative discipline because to understand any place you must consider the complex range of forces that have shaped it. The Department of Geography at UNH is strongest in cultural, political, urban, historical, and environmental geography, climatology, and geotechniques. Faculty members have regional specialties in New England, North America, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Japan. Download a brochure about the department.

Map of the 13 Colonies The Three Regions of the 13 Colonies
    • The number of people differed among the colony regions; the amount of land in the colonies also differed among the regions with small numbers of people on huge tracts of land. The first European colonists didn't know how big North America was because they didn't have a map of the continent. The three geographic regions of the 13 Colonies were the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies.

    The New England Colonies
    • The four original New England Colonies were :
New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

The Environment of the New England Colonies
    • The climate of the New England Colonies was colder than the other two colonial regions because they were the farthest north. The climate was a positive factor for the colonists in the New England Colonies; it prevented the spread of life-threatening diseases.
