New Hampshire Libraries Band Together for their Implementation of Koha with ByWater Solutions ByWater Solutions, an open source community supporter and official Koha support company, announced today that The Monadnock Library Community of New Hampshire has partnered with them for the installation and support of the community version of the Koha integrated library system. The MLC is comprised of three libraries in New Hampshire: the Fitzwilliam Town Library of Fitzwilliam, the Jaffrey Public Library of Jaffrey, and Gay-Kimball Library of Troy. Among the reasons for the creation of the MLC were the library’s common technology needs, collaborative spirits, and legacy ILSs. The three libraries will be implemented on a union catalog, which will allow them to share their resources seamlessly in true open source fashion. The Koha catalog is extremely scalable over time, so new additions to the community will have a seamless integration once the catalog is up and running.

NH Summer Reading Program.  Artist:  Karel Hayes Whether looking for something for the kids to do or an excuse to get them into a library, New Hampshire libraries are offering fun events and an exciting reading contest to encourage children to read this summer. The New Hampshire Summer Reading Program, sponsored by the Children's Librarians Section of the New Hampshire Library Association, provides a theme each summer to encourage children to read . This year's theme is, “Summertime . . . and the Reading is Easy,” has been adopted by about 150 of the almost 240 libraries in the state. Though they are not required to follow the guidelines, all participating New Hampshire libraries receive a free advertising poster and information to assist with reading lists, program and craft ideas, etc. According to Ann Hoey, the youth services coordinator for the New Hampshire State Library, about 55 public libraries in New Hampshire have received grants from the New Hampshire State Library through the Kids, Books and the Arts program. Hoey states that this grant, “allows libraries to bring a storyteller, musician, magician, puppeteer, theatrical group or other presenter to their communities for an event/workshop during the Summer Reading Program.” The hope is to bring more families and children to local libraries and increase participation in the reading program.

Posted on No Comments Recently I happened to run across this statement on the Peterborough Town Library The library was established in 1833 due to the efforts of Dr. Abiel Abbot, Unitarian minister, who encouraged the creation of a library owned by the town for the benefit of residents. The Peterborough Town Library was the first of its kind, a successful experiment in books owned collectively by a town. Later, in 1849, a law was enacted in New Hampshire allowing other municipalities to establish similar libraries.

in 1792, Portsmouth, Rochester and our own Tamworth in 1796. In 1992, Jean wrote her in which she says, The Tamworth Social Library, one of the earliest in the state, was founded by Parson Samuel Hidden in 1796 and was supported in its entirety by the pioneer members of this small, wilderness village. Then, in 1891, the New Hampshire legislature approved the Free Library Act, appointing a State Library commission and authorizing benefits to New Hampshire tows for the purpose of establishing free, public libraries. In February 1892, the Tamworth town warrant included an article “…to see if the town will vote to accept the provision of law, chapter 8, section 21-26, in regard to having a public library in town.” Category: Local History News
