New Jersey was an important battleground during the Revolutionary War , and this small colony won statehood on December 18, 1787. Since then, the third state has grown to become the most populated state per square mile in the whole country. New York City to the northeast and Philadelphia to the southwest, as well as Atlantic City to the southeast, have each contributed to the built-up urban areas in New Jersey. However, "The Garden State" is also known for the New Jersey Shore , where vacationers and summer home owners enjoy beaches, boardwalks, and outdoor recreation. The Great Swamp and Appalachian Mountains in northern New Jersey and the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey remind everyone that New Jersey has its share of wilderness. Farmland in the flat parts of the state produces the third largest harvest of

New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards were first adopted by the State Board of Education in 1996. The standards describe what students should know and be able to do upon completion of a thirteen-year public education and provide local school districts with clear and specific benchmarks for student achievement in nine content areas. The 2009 standards reflect current research, exemplary practices, national and state standards and standards from other countries. They were drafted by taskforces consisting of educators and experts recognized for their content area expertise and for demonstration of excellence as practitioners in their respective fields. In each content area, standards and cumulative progress indicators align with the knowledge and skills needed for post-secondary education and the workplace.
The standards unit provides local school districts with technical assistance to ensure that all students receive appropriate standards-based education. Content coordinators provide telephone, electronic, and on-site technical assistance in areas related to curriculum development and alignment, policy development, student assessment, and research-based practices. For more information on those services, go to the content area pages.
