Did you know that 40,000 people visit Disneyland every day? That's pretty amazing, isn't it? The New Jersey State Library and the New Jersey Library Association held two Snapshot Days in 2009, one in February and one in October. The purpose? To capture the impact that New Jersey libraries have on their communities on a typical day. This joint project was a model of collaboration and a great example of a multi-type library project. We asked librarians from all types of libraries to participate, and participate they did: public and academic libraries, school and special libraries, hospital libraries and government libraries; from the tiniest facility to the largest county systems. We created a quick survey to capture the daily activities of libraries across the state, and hundreds of libraries sent us their survey results.
The numbers were impressive. More than 160,000 people walked through our libraries' doors and librarians answered nearly 20,000 reference questions. The comments submitted by library customers were the most wonderful, heartfelt endorsements imaginable.

THREATS TO NEW JERSEY LIBRARIES As many of you know, Governor's Christie's budget proposes cuts to the following budget lines: Library Network Aid, Per Capita Library Aid, Virtual Library. Additionally, the budget proposes moving the State Library under the auspices of Rutgers University, and there is a bill pending ( ) to eliminate the 1/3 of a mil minimum funding for municipal libraries. For more details on these threats see NJLA's Legislative Alert We are working with the library community to develop an advocacy plan to address these threats. As our advocacy efforts develop we will be in touch with HRLC members through our listserv, webpage, blog, and all channels at our disposal. We are asking for the restoration of 10.4 million dollars to local libraries. These funds provide libraries with Internet connections, website and email hosting, interlibrary loan, delivery of library materials, electronic resources, as well a library for the blind and handicapped. Here are things you can do

NJ Libraries Eliminated From State Budget
Gov. Christie's budget calls for a 74% decrease in funding for statewide library services. This cut includes the elimination of all statewide library programs and services. This will affect all types of libraries in New Jersey. Once state funding is eliminated, NJ will lose $4.5 million in federal funding. What does this mean to NJ residents? Once state and federal funding are lost the impact will be felt by all residents:
  • Access to electronic databases such as RefUSA and EBSCO will cease
  • Statewide interlibrary loan and delivery of library materials will cease
  • Libraries will lose 50% of state aid at a time when demand for services is increasing dramatically
  • More than half of public libraries will lose access to the Internet
  • Many libraries will lose email service
  • Many libraries will lose their websites or access to them
  • The Talking Book and Braille Center (known as the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped) will close
  • Group contracts which bring down the cost of other electronic resources purchased by libraries will cease At the same time the state is eliminating funding for library programs. Assemblyman John DiMaio has introduced A2555 which eliminates the minimum local funding requirement for municipal public libraries.
