Staying Sober in Mexico City
By Stanley Brandes
Table of Contents and Excerpt
Search in this book "This is an impeccably crafted work by one of the most widely respected anthropologists of his generation.... I am quite confident that it will become not only the standard reference on the cultural study of alcoholism in Mexico, but also one of the very best overall social science contributions to the study of Mexican culture produced in the last fifty years." Staying sober is a daily struggle for many men living in Mexico City, one of the world's largest, grittiest urban centers. In this engaging study, Stanley Brandes focuses on a common therapeutic response to alcoholism, Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), which boasts an enormous following throughout Mexico and much of Latin America. Over several years, Brandes observed and participated in an all-men's chapter of A.A. located in a working class district of Mexico City. Employing richly textured ethnography, he analyzes the group's social dynamics, therapeutic effectiveness, and ritual and spiritual life. Brandes demonstrates how recovering alcoholics in Mexico redefine gender roles in order to preserve masculine identity. He also explains how an organization rooted historically in evangelical Protestantism has been able to flourish in Roman Catholic Latin America.

for pleasure travel and business travel. The National Anthropology Museum I n bringing together the vestiges of the past with the daily activities of the present, the National Museum of Anthropology has achieved a truly magnificent museological space. Here are assembled the major archeological and ethnographic collections gathered in Mexico since the 18th Century, when interest in the native heritage destroyed by the encounter between two worlds first took hold. Coatlicue Godess at Mexica Hall I n the early sixties, the construction of a building of such dimensions required close cooperation between architects, museologists, anthropological researchers, artists, designers, and engineers to build, in record time, the imposing edifice that today stands before us, virtually unchanged since its formal inauguration in 1964.
T he size of the project and the unique nature of this museum enable its 26 exhibit halls containing one of a kind exhibits, maps, explanatory illustrations and audiovisual presentations, to be visited both chronologically and by cultural region. The museum is also endowed with a vigorous program of parallel cultural activities consisting of conferences, movies, a well-stocked bookstore, the sale of reproductions of the display pieces, a rich and varied library with a unique reserved stock, and special temporary exhibits of a high standard.

His work expresses the desire of a new understanding of the everyday object, like a scientific approach to a latent reality. During more than 23 years he has painted progressively incorporating techniques and materials that have built a three-dimensional structure of virtual space. The optic field in his recent works is not a mere assembly of effects, it is the pragmatic synthesis of a hyperrealist-surrealist art that is in Mexico beginning to get rid of its atavism to folklore. In this sense, he is a part of the solid vanguard of Latin American artists that have been widely recognized abroad and that set the bases of Contemporary Art in Mexico.

Sincronía Winter 1996 A Semiotics of Film and Literary Fiction: Classic, Modern, and Postmodern Lauro Zavala UAM Xochimilco, Mexico City In this paper I propose to study a series of formal elements common to narrative film and literary fiction in order to establish the difference between what is known as classic, modern, and postmodern fiction (in cinema and written fiction). In this way I intend to discuss elements that belong in common to literary theory and media studies. It has always been granted that classic and modern traditions are opposite to each other, at least in formal terms. Classic tradition is stable and depends on the text. Modern tradition is sustained by the concept of rupture. It is, as Octavio Paz has said, a tradition of rupture. 1. Postmodern life is a way to look at texts Postmodern culture is a paradoxical juxtaposition of elements that originally belonged to both traditions, and that has only become possible with the coming into play of the political dimension of the interpreter of cultural texts, be it a reader, a spectator, a visitor, a listener or simply a consumer. Sorne of the contemporary theories about postmodern aesthetics focus on one of its formal dimensions, or just take the consequence as the cause, considering that there just

for pleasure travel and business travel. The Metropolitan Cathedral T he cathedral and its vestry represent a synthesis of art forms in New Spain . Penetrating its imposing sun-bathed baroque and neoclassical facade, the visitor enters the ethereal half-light of this hallowed shrine, with its five separate naves, its side chapels, and its sacred religious icons. The religious ceremonies are performed with the full dignity of the Catholic faith and, with a little luck, it may be possible to hear the strains of one of the cathedral's monumental organs. The City's soft clay subsoil, subject to continuous movement over the years, has propitiated the gradual sinking of many building such as the cathedral, and sophisticated restoration works, partially visible, have prevented its collapse. Exterior harmony T his monumental structure which today dominates Mexico's main square -the Zocalo- is not the same as that which initially replaced the Templo Mayor in 1572 the Archbishop Pedro Moya de Contreras laid the first stone which, after 42 symbolic years, was inaugurated by the Viceroy Duke of Alburquerque and was later re-dedicated in 1667 by the Viceroy Mancera.

Mauricio Rodriguez Anza has a strong urge to explore the revaluation of form in Mexican architecture. His revision of modem Mexican architecture suggests a dialogue between exterior and interior spaces. The leitmotif of his recent work consists of examining three-dimensional drawing by way of tectonic drawings which have gradually evolved into specific languages with a corresponding physical equivalent It has led him to erect installations that begin by dealing with a three-dimensional space in order to develop a new vocabulary for large formats. The architectural deconstruction presented by Mauricio Rodriguez Anza in Summons consists of separating the architectural drawings of the physical aspect of facades (structural articulation that is beginning to be used as a way to decode architecture from deep-rooted traditions of icons that propose main entrances, front with regard to rear, etc., and is becoming increasingly more referential). He wants to remove the masks that have attempted to hide the essence of modern architecture, that is, its structure.
