Geography Welcomes new Chair - Scott Freundschuh
Scott Freundschuh Professor Scott Freundschuh joins the Department of Geography at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque having just completed a two-year appointment as Program Director in Geography and Spatial Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF). While at NSF, Scott also served as Technical Coordinator for the NSF funded Spatial Intelligence and Learning Center. Prior to his appointment at NSF Scott was Professor in the Geography Department at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he conducted research and taught courses in Geographic Information Sciences. His research interests are in the field of cognitive science, specifically spatial cognition as it relates to types of spatial knowledge and their structures, geographic scale, and spatial concept development and understanding. His research has considered the role that sources of spatial information, such as maps and navigation play in cognition and learning, has explored the development of spatial concept understanding in small- and large-scale spaces, and it has tested the use of novel map representations to perform spatial tasks such as navigation and location tasks. His work is clearly interdisciplinary, involving research relevant to behavioral geography, cognitive psychology and GIScience in general.

Some History of Las Vegas NM -
Las Vegas was established in 1835 after a group of settlers received a land grant from the Mexican government. The town was laid out in the traditional Spanish Colonial style, with a central plaza surrounded by buildings which could serve as fortifications in case of attack. Las Vegas soon prospered as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. During the Mexican-American War in 1846, Stephen W. Kearny delivered an address at the Plaza of Las Vegas claiming New Mexico for the United States.

Pullman Kids: Geography: Mexico
Dancers at San Marino Plaza. Pullman Kids: Geography: Mexico provides pictures and descriptions of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. Mexico like Canada and the United States is part of North America. It is hotter than Canada because it is closer to the Equator. Its full name is the United States of Mexico. Unlike Canada which has English and French as the official languages, and the U.S.A. which has only English, Mexico has Spanish as its official language. In Puerto Vallarta a lot of people can speak a certain amount of English because its main industry is tourism. Puerto Vallarta is in the state of Jalisco on the west coast (i.e. the Pacific Ocean). Puerto means "port". It is south of the Baha Peninsula and north of Acapulco.
