Multifamily housing may be the biggest beneficiary of his leadership at HUD. IF KNOW-HOW, BRAINS AND CHARM were all it would take to revamp the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), everybody could sit back and relax. Nicolas P. ("Nic") Retsinas, the assistant secretary for housing/FHA commissioner, has more than his share of all three and the drive it takes to use them. Unfortunately, he is bucking entrenched bureaucracy both inside HUD and in the congressional committees that oversee housing. Furthermore, this very same Washington bureaucracy, in recent years, has become more adept at avoiding decisions and innovations than in developing and acting on new ideas. The story of what was accomplished in Rhode Island under his stewardship sheds some light on the man's ability to get things done. The litany of accomplishments speaks for itself. "Innovative, creative programs...provided access and construction activities, redeveloped urban communities, brought new opportunity especially to minorities," says Keith W. Stokes, executive director of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce and a former colleague at RIHMFC. "He leveraged new avenues of federal participation, brought in Fannie Mae. He's one of the few top government administrators who really believes in public service...he brings a lot of magic to any job."

Print Family Programs at Museums, Free (mostly) NYC Kid Events April 12th, 2009 11:57 pm ET Family Museum Programs One of the best parts of living in or visiting New York City is the chance to introduce kids to scary intimidating museums and their collections through simple, quick, interactive programs. These typically 90 minute programs are themed to focus on a particular aspect of artoften tied to a current exhibit. They begin with a tour of the gallery, often a visit to 3-4 works with a 10 minute interactive session at each piece, and then a make-your-own art session.  Museums listed in alphabetical order. TIPS: 1) Stay within the recommended age limits, the classes are really very geared to particular ages and it will avoid boredmn and embarrassment for all parties. 2) This list is for single, recurring family events. Many of the museums also run ongoing classes or one-time programs requiring advance registration. Check individual museum sites for that. 3) All of these programs are adult + child, NONE OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE DROP-OFF.
