About Columbia County
Columbia County was formed in 1786 out of Albany County. In 1799, the southern boundary of Columbia County was modified to include the portion of Livingston Manor located in Dutchess County. The county seat was originally at Claverack, but moved to Hudson in 1805, where it is today. Columbia County is in the northern part of the Hudson River Valley, about 125 miles north of New York city and 35 miles south-east of Albany. It is 36 miles from North to South, and 18 miles from East to West. It contains 688 square miles
Boundary
Columbia County is bounded by the following counties:

Original settlement was by the Dutch near Kinderhook, in the north-west corner of the county, followed by a Palatine German settlement at Germantown (then East Kamp) in the southwest corner of the county. The eastern border was settled in the 1750's by New Englanders from Massachusetts and Connecticut. In the 1780's a group of New England Quakers from Nantucket and surrounding areas created the city of Hudson. The New York Genealogy Guide links to all that hard work that is posted all over the web. Is it on the NYGenWeb county site or the county archive site? Is it listed on the ALHN or AHGP or maybe county genealogical society page? It might even be listed on a small family website. To top it all off you have to check many different counties because one area of the state was part of a different county depending on the year. I know I was getting confused about which sites I had already checked.

the "internet-only" researcher cannot match Have you searched for your family tree on the Internet, and have you been disappointed by a lack of success? That is because 97 percent of the genealogical records held in the United States have not yet been computerized. These records are still stored on dusty shelves in the vaults of local and state collections. One way to find these sources is to visit in person. Another method is to write letters of inquiry. But suppose that visiting is out of the question, even if you have the time and the resources. And because of the inadequate staff attending these special collections, your query letters may go unanswered for months, when they are answered at all. Fortunately there is a better way to conduct your research. It is cheaper than visiting, and faster than a letter campaign. Simply take advantage of the local genealogical researcher, the man who knows exactly where to find these sources, who will then report back to you personally.
