New York Libraries Play Vital Role in Helping Patrons Find Jobs
New Poll Shows 80% of Libraries Assisted With Job Search
ALBANY, NY (02/09/2009)(readMedia) The New York Library Association (NYLA) today announced the results of a recent survey which shows that 80% of the libraries in the state have helped someone search for a job in the past three months. "When the neediest among us are looking for help, now is not the time to be cutting the very services and assistance New Yorkers rely on the most" Borges said. "When folks lose jobs or cut back on spending for fear of losing their jobs, people turn to libraries for free internet access and books, cds, videos and literacy programs for their families. Libraries have become part of society's safety net for the neediest in our communities." The poll also showed that 75% of libraries have helped a patron access a public assistance program in the last three months. The Governor's 2009-10 Executive Budget proposes to reduce state funding for library services by $18 million or 18%, which would reduce Library Aid to $80.5 million, a level not seen since 1993. These cuts are on top of the two cuts already imposed on libraries in 2008, reducing Library Aid from $102 million in 2007 to $98.5 million at the end of 2008. The proposed cuts will also result in a corresponding loss of $2 million in federal funds for library services in New York, reducing federal aid from $9 million to $7 million by 2011.

By SherylKnab - Posted on 21 January 2010 It is distressing that Governor Patterson has chosen to propose yet another cut to our library system funding. If supported by the legislature, this is the fifth cut in two years: from $102.8 million in 2007/2008 fiscal year to the proposed budget of $84.5 million for 2010/2011. For more information on New York Library Association's position, see http://www.nyla.org/index.php?page_id=1883 The three NY Library systems (NY 3Rs, Public Libraries and School Libraries) cannot sustain these severe budget cuts. To make matters worse, there does not seem to be a library champion in the legislature to help us fight these cuts. Please click on the tab Find Your Representative to find out who represents you. Now is the time to contact your legislators and help us fight for libraries.

    Who may borrow?
    • A currently validated I.D. card must be presented to enter or borrow library materials from any CUNY school. CUNY faculty, staff, currently enrolled students, and retired faculty (with appropriate identification) may borrow books from any CUNY library except:
The CUNY Law School Library only lends to Law School faculty, staff and students. Patrons from other CUNY colleges can visit the CUNY Law Library but have no borrowing privileges.
Students currently enrolled in SUNY's Empire State College students are granted the same borrowing privileges as CUNY students. They should be issued a CUNY Open Access card with a generic barcode with an expiration date at the end of the semester.

Blackstone Founder to Give $100m to New York Libraries
Stephen A Schwarzman today announced that he was donating $100m of his fortune to the New York library service Guarded by two stone lions nicknamed "patience" and "fortitude", the New York public library has been a beaux-arts landmark since 1911. It will shortly enter a new phase of its history renamed as the Stephen A Schwarzman building.
The founder of the Blackstone private equity empire today announced that he was donating $100m of his fortune to the New York library service – a gift greeted by mayor Michael Bloomberg as "incredible".
"It's the generosity of New Yorkers like Steve that really sets this city apart," said Bloomberg.
The money will be used for renovation and expansion of the city's libraries. But it comes at an awkward time for 61-year-old Schwarzman, who has seen his wealth slump along with Blackstone's stock.
When Blackstone became the first major private equity firm to go public in June, its shares were priced at $31. They have since halved, trading at $15.55 today, and the company suffered an 89% plunge in its fourth-quarter profits.
Forbes magazine calculates that Schwarzman's personal worth has declined from nearly $10bn to $6.5bn. Blackstone's difficulties center on problems in the credit market which have made it hard to arrange the leveraged debt buyouts on which the firm built its success.

New York - Libraries and museums
The leading public library systems and their operating statistics as of 1999 were the New York Public Library, 17,762,034 volumes in 127 branches; Brooklyn Public Library, 6,800,000 volumes and 10,077,559 circulation; Queens Borough Public Library, 8,668,948 volumes and 14,829,837 circulation; and Buffalo and Erie County system, 5,240,965 volumes and 8,734,854 circulation. There are about 671 museums in New York State; about 150 are major museums, of which perhaps 80% are in New York City. In addition, some 579 sites of historic importance are maintained by local historical societies. Major art museums in New York City include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with more than one million art objects and paintings from virtually every period and culture; the Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum devoted entirely to medieval art and architecture; the Frick collection; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Brooklyn Museum; and two large modern collections, the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (the latter designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in a distinctive spiral pattern). The Jewish Museum, the Museum of the American Indian, and the museum and reference library of the Hispanic Society of America specialize in cultural history. The sciences are represented by the American Museum of Natural History, famed for its dioramas of humans and animals in natural settings and for its massive dinosaur skeletons; the Hayden Planetarium; the New York Botanical Garden and New York Zoological Society Park (Bronx Zoo), both in the Bronx. Also of interest are the Museum of the City of New York, the Museum of the New-York Historical Society, the South Street Seaport Museum, and the New York Aquarium.
