American Influence Over New Zealand Culture
Running head: AMERICAN INFLUENCE OVER NEW ZEALAND CULTURE
American Influence over New Zealand Culture
Mark Fraser
November 18, 2004
Abstract
War World 2 was a pivotal point of change for New Zealand. The country went from being a colonial country dependent or rather in awe of our mother country, England, to being a Colonial country now more excited with new contact with the new world super power of America. America's acceptance as defender of the Pacific was the wedge that quickly romanticises the New Zealand people into a 60 year love affair with all things American. New Zealand has now reached a point where American media and influence in this country has now become integrated into the New Zealand culture and psyche itself.
American Influence over New Zealand Culture
Since the start of the "American Invasion" of New Zealand in 1942, New Zealand has become greatly dependent on America. From political to fashion, culture and entertainment, all areas of New Zealand life have been increasingly influenced from our relationship with the United States. Our loyalty/dependency to our once influential homelands in Britain, England especially, has been slowly washed away in the tides of American culture that floods the New Zealand citizen everyday.

No matter where you live in New Zealand, you are probably less than an hour from the ocean, and less than 4 hours from a ski field. Which means on the same day you can mountain bike, snowboard and surf!
With just over 4 million people living in New Zealand, it's easy to find - or get away from - the crowd. So if your preference is access to big-city shopping, check out Auckland (the largest city with over 1.5 million residents), Christchurch, Wellington (the capital) or Dunedin. Click here to search each city for events.
But one of the joys of New Zealand is that you can also choose to live a more rural lifestyle, and still live within an hour's drive of the centre of any of these cities. Or you can choose to settle in the country - there's plenty of room for expansion here! Mad on sports

CULTURE Maori are the indigenous people of the land (tangata whenua) of New Zealand and their culture is an integral part of New Zealand life. Visitors to New Zealand are presented with many opportunities to experience Maori culture first-hand. The best-known of these is the thermal region of Rotorua in the North Island, where tourists can experience Maori kai (food) cooked on hot stones underground as part of a traditional hangi. They can also enjoy a Maori powhiri (welcome), visit local marae (meeting grounds), listen to kapa haka (traditional performances of song and dance) and relax in the popular thermal pools.

New Zealand : Culture
European cultural life has progressed rapidly since the early 20th century. Numerous writers were active in the late 19th century, the most successful of whom were historians, such as William Pember Reeves, and ethnologists, including S. Percy Smith and Elsdon Best. The work of the first genuinely original writers of fiction, the short-story writer Katherine Mansfield and the poet R.A.K. Mason, did not appear until the 1920s. During the harsh years of the Great Depression of the 1930s a group of poets appeared and accomplished a national tradition of writing. Although determined by contemporary English literatureT.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden were greatly respectedthey wrote about their New Zealand experience. The most famous member of this group was Allen Curnow. A.R.D. Fairburn, Denis Glover, and Charles Brasch were other major poets. At the same time Frank Sargeson began writing the superb stories in New Zealand vernacular for which he became well known.

Culture Shock
When a person moves to a new country it is normal for them to experience a level of anxiety that is known as Culture Shock. This common experience is nearly universal for those people who choose to cross borders and enter into new cultural situations. Culture Shock will usually be felt within the first few weeks of arrival. But it has been known to hit almost instantaneously after someone leaves the airport or terminal. Although Culture Shock is not a particularly heinous condition it can impede a persons chances of crossing over into the new culture. But for most people Culture Shock is a temporary condition and usually resolved in the first six months of arrival.
So... how do I know I am feeling Culture Shock?

New Zealand Culture
Contemporary New Zealand has a diverse culture with influences from English, Scottish, Irish, American, Australian and Maori cultures, along with those of other European cultures and – more recently – Polynesian cultures other than that of the Maori (including Samoan, Tongan, Tokelaun Niuean, Cook Islands Maori, Tahitian, and Hawaiian); also southern Asian (Indian), Southeast Asian (Filipino, Malaysian, Cambodian, and Vietnamese), and east Asian (Chinese, Korean, and Japanese) cultures. Large festivals in celebration of Diwali and Chinese New Year are held in Auckland, as is the world's largest Polynesian festival, Pasifika.
New Zealand Cultural Links
Cultural links between New Zealand and the United Kingdom are maintained by a common language, sustained migration from the United Kingdom and the fact that many young New Zealanders spend time in the United Kingdom on their "overseas experience" (OE). The music of New Zealand and cuisine of New Zealand are similar to that of Britain and the United States, although both have some distinct New Zealand and Pacific qualities. Maori culture has undergone considerable change since the arrival of Europeans; in particular the introduction of Christianity in the early 19th century brought about fundamental change in everyday life. Nonetheless the perception that most Maori now live similar lifestyles to their Pakeha neighbours is a superficial one. In fact, Maori culture has significant differences, for instance the important role which the marae continues to play in communal and family life.
