New Zealand and Maori History
New Zealand was founded as a nation by the Treaty of Waitangi, which was signed by the British crown and about 540 Maori rangatira (chiefs). The treaty was designed to ensure the Maori chiefs preserved their rangatiratanga (chieftainship or authority) under British sovereignty. Crucially both sides believed this meant different things, a difference in expectations that would lead to war , within just five years of its signing.
The New Zealand Wars
The New Zealand Wars pitched the might of the British Empire and a number of Maori tribes that remained loyal to the crown against the majority of the Maori people . Through the use of ingenious tactics and innovative fortifications the Maori side was able to withstand the attacks for many years before eventually succumbing to the British side's main unmatchable advantage, its vast numerical advantage

New Zealand : History
Archaeological evidence indicates that New Zealand was populated by fishing and hunting people of East Polynesian ancestry perhaps 1,000 years before Europeans arrived. Known to some scholars as the Moa-hunters, they may have merged with later waves of Polynesians who, according to Maori tradition, arrived between 952 and 1150. Some of the Maoris called their new homeland "Aotearoa," usually translated as "land of the long white cloud." In the same year, selected groups from the United Kingdom began the colonization process. Expanding European settlement led to conflict with Maori, most notably in the Maori land wars of the 1860s. British and colonial forces eventually overcame determined Maori resistance. During this period, many Maori died from disease and warfare, much of it intertribal. The Maori gradually recovered from population decline and, through interaction and intermarriage with settlers and missionaries, adopted much of European culture. In recent decades, Maori have become increasingly urbanized and have become more politically active and culturally assertive.

Maori Legend - the creation of New Zealand
The First New Zealand / Natural History of New Zealand
Two hundred million years ago, the world was vastly different to how it is today. The southern continents of South America, Africa, Australia and Antarctica were not spread separately around the globe as they are now. Instead, they were locked together in a single continent called Gondwana. At such depths, intense heat and pressure forged the soft silts and muds into hard rock, laying down the foundations for a future land. Then, about 130 million years ago, they became caught in a series of earth movements that lifted them above the waves. The ancestral New Zealand land had been born! Almost as soon as it was lifted from the sea, earth movements started that would ultimately fragment Gondwana. South America and Africa were the first to break ties, giving birth to the South Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. Similar rifts opened between Australia and New Zealand, so that by 100 million years ago an infant Tasman Sea had developed between them. These earth movements were happening at a critical time for life on our planet. The three major living groups of flowering plants, birds and mammals were dispersing on dry land, however time was running out as the land was dividing. The appearance of new seas was blocking their dispersal routes, and for New Zealand which was beginning to detach itself completely from other continents, this was particularly the case.

New Zealand History New Zealand People
New Zealand history is closely related to New Zealand people and is split into two distinct phases the pre-European and recent one. Pre–European history of New Zealand belongs to the original migrants the Moriori or so called Moa (a 3,7m tall flightless bird) hunters and the recent one to European settlers. Moriori and Maori both are today believed to origin from the Polynesian Islands. Their difference is the timely arrival. It is possible they arrived around 800 AD and earlier. Historical events are in Maori tradition orally passed on from generation to generation. Differences in their storyline occur according to the teller. Widely accepted is that Kupe a Polynesian navigator discovered New Zealand 950 AD when sailing in his waka from Hawaiiki. From this time New Zealand carries the name Aotearoa the land of the long white cloud . With different migration streams more fleets of wakas and their iwi reached New Zealand shores. Iwis are the tribes around which Maori societies revolve. Before the main migration stream arrived at the shores there were the deserting sealers, whalers, and Australian ex-convicts. These first migrants were often called
