Culture Nicaragua, - So many articles and much information is usually one sided when it comes to talk of the culture of a country. Here we want to break the mould and include not only what the extranjeros (foreigners) think but also and to my way of thinking is more important that of what the local Nicaraguans think. After all isn't it their culture. We have included both my badly translated version together for those of you more fortunate, the unedited Spanish version. Culture Nicaragua is a fascinating story of history as it has been and in some cases is lived. The history of Nicaragua is a colorful one including both the Mayan and Aztec cultures together with a great influence from the Spanish with a sprinkling of Caribbean culture of the Garfino. A great part of any culture, not only culture Nicaragua, is that of the folk lore that goes with the traditions. My Traditions.. The Pursima. Culture Nicaragua

It is a style of writing. This style uses words that make up a rhythm. Some poems rhyme, some don't. Do you hear or read poems? You probably do. Think about the music you listen to. A lot of music uses poems. Singers sing poems in songs. So you probably know many poems! Can you write a poem? Some people are very good at writing poems. In Nicaragua, there was a young man who was very good at writing poems. His name was Ruben Dario. Dario was a poet at a very young age. In fact, he is known as "El Nino Poeta," which is Spanish for "The Child Poet." His life and writing would change poetry all across Central and South America.

Nicaragua, officially the Republic of Nicaragua (Spanish: Repblica de Nicaragua). The country's name is a portmanteau of Nicarao, the name of the Nahuatl-speaking tribe which inhabited the shores of Lake Nicaragua before the Spanish conquest of the Americas, and the Spanish word Agua, meaning water, due to the presence of the large lakes 'Lake Nicaragua" and Lake Managua in the region. Nicaragua is the largest country of Central America. It borders Honduras in the north and Costa Rica in the south and it houses two big lakes: Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua. Lake Nicaragua is the biggest lake of Central America and has the only fresh-water sharks in the world! Managua, Nicaragua's capital city, is equipped with all modern facilities. Cinemas, shopping malls, and high class hotels can be found in the capital. In colonial cities like Len or Granada you can still find ancient, colorful houses, charming little streets, and lively plazas. Two small islands in the Atlantic Ocean - the Corn Islands - offer everything for a pleasant Caribbean vacation: white beaches, tropical blue waters, and magnificent coral reefs. Every traveler can find his favorite place in Nicaragua! A tropical climate can be observed in Nicaragua. Just as in the other Central American countries, there are two seasons: the dry and the raining season. During the dry season (January - June) there is virtually no rain and trees and plants start to dry out. Once the rains come around June, July, everything starts growing and the yellow plants and leafless trees turn green and start blossoming. In August and September it often rains once a day. Fortunately, it just rains for a short period of time and these are often spectacular, tropical downpours. In the eastern part of the country it rains more than in the west.

CULTURE
Earthquakes and war have obliterated much tangible evidence of Nicaragua's cultural heritage, especially its colonial architecture - although Len retains many fine old buildings. Poetry is one of Nicaragua's most beloved arts and no other Central American country can match its literary output. Rubn Daro (1867-1916) is known as the 'Prince of Spanish-American literature' and recent work by Nicaraguan poets, fiction writers and essayists can be found in most bookshops. Bluefields, the largely English-speaking town on the Caribbean coast, is a center for reggae music. The Archipilago de Solentiname in Lago de Nicaragua is famous as a haven for artists, poets and craftspeople. Sandinista street art in the form of modernist murals is especially prominent in the university town of Len. Spanish is the language of Nicaragua but English and a number of Indian languages are spoken on the Caribbean coast. The main religion is Catholicism, although there are a number of Protestant sects such as the Pentecostals and the Baptists. The Moravian church, introduced by British missionaries, is important on the Caribbean coast. Nicaragua is also home to red-roofed Spanish colonial cities with magnificent churches and cathedrals, little white villages set in coffee and pineapple farms, island bound art colonies, a wide open countryside where horses and oxcarts are still the mode of transport and some of Latin America's most beautiful ceramic, leather and wood crafts and the world's best hammocks and most delicious and varied rum.

Loading Map Map your own trip! Map Options Show trip route Hide lines Where I stayed Via Via Leon hotels Leon Nicaragua Sunday, October 18, 2009 Thanks to an early start, we found ourselves in Leon late on Sunday morning. This gave us some time to set out and begin to explore the town before our first activity. Leon is the former capital of Nicaragua , and its a very pretty, old, colonial town. Although theres clearly more tourism here than in El Salvador , its still fairly non-touristy. After walking around the town a bit, we decided to sign up for a tour that had been recommended by another traveler.
This particular tour is a visit to a Gallera, or a rooster fight, in one of the suburbs of Leon . On Sunday afternoons, one family in the neighborhood organizes the event, and people (primarily men) from around the neighborhood come to either fight their roosters or to bet on other roosters. The tour included information over the tradition, the training of the roosters, the rules, the betting and the actual fight itself John and a Badger Fan
For me, the afternoon confirmed that Im not a fan of fighting any animals for sport, but it was definately an interesting experience. As weve found in many places lately, the people were friendly and accepting, and nobody seemed concerned by the group of gringos who would have clearly been otherwise out of place at the event. As part of the tour we were on, John was even able to have the chance to watch one match from inside the ring, beside the owner of the complex. In all, we saw about 6-8 fights, but we left before the evening was over. According to the owner, the event can last anywhere from three to nine hours, depending on the number of roosters on a given day.

  • About Nicaragua
    Traditional Nicaraguan Food
ViaNica.com Specials Traditional Nicaraguan Food The Nicaraguan culinary art dates back to the pre-Colombian times, as you can tell by the names of the most known plates. Back then, during colonial times, the peculiar, creative, and varied Creole menu was the result of the union of these two races. In this type of food, ranging from soups and meats to a diversity of sweets, interesting ingredients are used.
    Sons of Corn
Since its origin, the fundamental basis of Nicaraguan gastronomy has been corn. Thus, its wide usage and derivatives constitutes the culinary inheritance left by indigenous tribes that lived in the area. This fact explains the similarities between the typical Nicaraguan food and those of other countries in the Central American region and Mexico. We all were sons of corn. Corn, as ingredient, has many different uses: lots of drinks are made from corn, such as Chicha and Pinol ; as well main dishes such as Nacatamal Indio Viejo , and Sopa de Albondiga ; and snacks and sweets such as Atolillo and Perrereque
    A World of Ingredients
There are also other ingredients widely used in the Nicaraguan kitchen, mostly local, tropical products. Nevertheless, Nicaraguan culinary creativity is meticulous and open, which enables the utilization of ingredients used all around the world such as tomato, onion, garlic, flour, rice, orange, mustard and mayonnaise, milk and cheese, vanilla and cinnamon, and more.

      Nicaragua Culture
Nicaragua is replete with interracial cultures. As in other Latin American nations, Spanish influence is great due to Spanish colonization. However, unlike some of these other countries, the ancient people that populated the territory did not leave great architectural structures in their cities; their decorated ceramic pieces are among the few remaining traces of their artistic heritage. Especially noteworthy are their musical instruments, including clarinets, maracas, and recorders that bring a lively note to the old-fashioned costumes of the people, the marimba being the most popular in the country. There still are some dances from the colonial days as well as some Spanish, colonial architecture especially seen in the cities of Granada and Leon. The people are characterized by the kindness and happiness they communicate with their visitors. The colorful celebration of holy days and other religious events attract many to the magic and animation of the local population which quickly includes everyone.
